Ridgewood is #1.
Moorestown is probably the best town in South Jersey if you don’t count the shore.

You’re in a different boat since you don’t have a real job or commute
If someone like you has to live in NJ I would look into the artsy river towns like Lambertville, Stockton, or Frenchtown
Those towns are very white*, rural, and crunchy. You shouldn’t advertise you’re conservative but even so people aren’t violent or abusive. Lots of gays so you can be con but don’t be homophobic (which I don’t think you are anyway).
* there are Central Americans in these towns cause someone has to work construction and in the restaurants…they are pretty chill and low key tho

Montclair - some parts are fantastic (upper Montclair gets a shout-out) and in some ways it is one of the best places for UMC yuppies to live. There are several cute town centers with great restaurants, some amazing parks, if you work in NYC there are great trains. The negatives are that a few parts are tiny little ghettos that feel like tiny pieces of Newark were teleported into Montclair. If you see some parts of the city that are weirdly cheap, this is why. The other obnoxious thing is that it is insanely shitlib, even for NJ.
Summit - Summit isn't Essex Co but feels like it is. Has a cute town center. You can also look at Millburn, Short Hills, nice parts of Maplewood, nice parts of South Orange, etc. for similar towns.
Ridgewood - Ridgewood is nice but feels quieter than Essex county
Middletown - idk
Red Bank - idk
Cherry Hill - this is more of a Philly suburb than a NYC suburb.
Moorestown - another Philly burb. No idea why you're comparing Philly burbs with NYC burbs.
Haddonfield - another Philly burb.
North Caldwell - known primarily for where Tony Soprano used to live. Otherwise, one of the quieter parts of Essex Co. Doesn't have a real town center.
