Earthbound snes is amazing and still my favorite game of all time. It is faggy and story driven but also funny as fuck and the combat is novel, grinding only required at one point.
Mother NES is unplayable without mods due to the random encounter rate. Couldn't get into it
Mother 3 (gba fan translation) is a disappointment compared to earthbound. Story is disjointed, characters weird. And its extremely fucking dark and depressing unlike earthbound. Your mom/wife is killed in the first 10 minutes and you spend the whole game (spoilers) searching for your baby brother just to learn he was killed on the same day but his body was mechanized and he has been controlling the enemy forces throughout the game as a soulless cyborg

The game is not too dark imho. The darkness is the price of the subject: you cannot tell a story about memory, mechanized innocence, and the moral exhaustion of a world while keeping the fuckin' SNES night-light on. Mother 3 is interested in what remains after a community discovers appetite, spectacle, convenience, grievance. Earthbound satirizes the world from inside childhood. Mother 3 prosecutes childhood from the far side of history. It is narrower, crueler, quieter, and smarter. The ending means Lucas has reached the point where preservation has become obscene. By the last Needle, what remains worth saving in its existing form? The world has made its confession. So Lucas pulls the Needle with the logic of the tragic child, burying the city for the sake of the dead. He must be thinking that continuation would be the final insult. Claus shows Lucas what the world has become capable of doing. The world took a child, emptied him, mechanized him, and sent him back as a weapon. After that, sparing the existing order starts to look obscene. So, Lucas may be honoring Claus in a darker way: by refusing to let the world that mutilated him continue on its own terms.
Mother 3 does something games almost never do. It refuses the restoration fantasy. Most games break the world so the player can fix it and feel clean. Mother 3 understands that some worlds cannot be fixed without lying about what happened inside them. Tazmily cannot go back. Claus cannot go back. Flint cannot go back. Even Lucas cannot go back. The final Needle is the admission that continuity itself has become morally suspect. Lucas lets the world end as mourning. That is the whole distinction. Tiny, brutal, metaphysical. If you need the game to explain that in bright RPG syntax, fine. But at that point you are not critiquing Mother 3. You are confessing a sensory limitation. The ending shows us that the highest form of mercy in a ruined world may look exactly like destruction. IOW, it is perhaps the most intellectual Game ever conceived. I say this as someone who's been critical of Nintendo in the past.

They kind of have mediocre Gameplay but I appreciate the skewering of westerners.
I don’t think JRPGs actually suit modern attention spans at all. It’s better if you have absolutely nothing to do like in the 90s. If you can handle dragon quest and shit, sure give it a try.
Play Earthbound. If you can handle more, do Mother 3. Don’t play the NES game.
Mother 3 is the most intellectual title of all time and it SKEWERS westerners. At one point it depicts old people living in squalor bc of western values.

It's funny I was actually getting ready to play the SNES one but then got into Mina the Hollower.
Probably will after I'm done Mina.
