American retailers are sounding the alarm on supply chain disruptions due to U.S. tariffs that could lead to significant shortages as soon as May. As the tariffs continue, the window of time to prevent these shortages is closing, too.
Anyone who was around during the pandemic will remember empty shelves due to Americans stocking up on toilet paper. Now, some worry that toilet paper could be scarce again, due to the U.S. tariffs and supply chain problems.
That's where a toilet paper alternative comes in. According to The Farmingdale Observer, Japan has created an alternative to toilet paper that's called the washlet toilet. "These high-tech fixtures use precisely directed water jets to clean thoroughly where paper merely smears. The technology offers adjustable water pressure, temperature control and sometimes even warm air drying features," The Farmingdale Observer noted.
The idea is that water can clean better than dry paper and that washing with water can feel "fresher" and reduce the possibility or irritation on your backside. Water can also be a more gentle way of cleaning than using dry paper. It's worth noting that the idea for the washlet toilet took shape way before the tariffs, so even if there was not a concern about a toilet paper shortage, the project is of interest.
"Water-based cleaning systems eliminate the need for rough wiping motions that can damage sensitive tissues," The Farmingdale Observer stated. "This gentler approach is particularly beneficial for people with chronic conditions, the elderly, or anyone recovering from surgical procedures in the area. The built-in bidets or washlets provide a hands-free cleaning experience that’s both more hygienic and more comfortable."
Those who want to use water-based cleaning instead of tissue don't have to replace their toilets. "Bidet attachments and washlet seats can be installed on most standard toilets" at a low cost, The Farmingdale Observer stated.
The idea of using water instead of paper in the restroom isn't totally new. Back in 2024, the Cleveland Clinic highlighted the benefits of using a bidet, stating that "a bidet can provide a better hygiene experience compared to toilet paper."
