But today’s industry has another challenge on the horizon: artificial intelligence. Many suggest AI tools offer opportunities to make VFX companies more time and cost efficient, while others warn that this could come at the expense of jobs. “The clients want it cheaper and fast, and they are looking for any alternative,” cautions Scott Ross, co-founder of Digital Domain, former general manager of ILM, and author of new book “Upstart.” “As soon as AI is able to do all of the tasks of visual effects workers, Game over. … I hope I’m wrong.”

At least CGI will look life like and we will have tons of inexpensive content with greater diversity.

Quebec’s animation industry is being decimated. Over half of all animation and vfx jobs in the Canadian province, including in the production hub of Montreal, have been lost since January 1, 2023, according to the Quebec Film and Television Council (QFTC).

The non-profit agency estimates that 4,167 workers have lost employment in the last 20 months, compared to over 8,000 people employed in late 2022.

Washington: James Cameron, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, has joined Stability AI's board of directors and is now exploring ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the filmmaking process.

In a recent interview, Cameron explained that his goal is to integrate AI into visual effects (VFX) workflows to reduce costs without laying off staff, as per Deadline.

Cameron wants to use AI to "cut the cost of that in half" without sacrificing the quality of big blockbuster films.

"If we want to continue to see the kinds of movies that I've always loved and that I like to make and that I will go to see -- Dune, Dune: Part Two, or one of my films or big effects-heavy, CG-heavy films -- we've got to figure out how to cut the cost of that in half," he said, as quoted by Deadline.
