I watched the successful Russian crime action film Brother (1997) tonight after it was recommended as a dissident film. The film captured a transitory era after perestroika where Russia was being absorbed into the global capitalist system with all that entailed, the changes of values, the nihilism, the capitalism, and the decline of family. The main character, played adroitly by Sergei Sergeyevich Bodrov (who died strangely in the 2002 Kolka–Karmadon rock ice slide which killed 120+ people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolka%E2%80%93Karmadon_rock_ice_slide) did a very good job in the role, even if he was serving as a blank slate. The film was well acted, well directed, with strong action and a good soundtrack - just a solid film, and it held my attention throughout. Other themes include the role of women in society (loyalty vs. disloyalty, strength versus weakness), the role of guns (difficult to acquire, homemade), ethnic division (Russians contrasted with Germans, Armenians, Tartars, Chechens, a throwaway line about Jews).

I wouldn’t call it a dissident film, although Bodrov’s character tries and fails to maintain his family ties to his brother which are dissolving due to the above influences, but I liked it and recommend it.

brat was influenced in tone and mood by a soviet-era film called "the red snowball tree." that one is about a released convict who tries to start over in a small siberian town, but is caught up in the consequences of his past.

I didn’t have that much interest in watching Brother 2 (2000), even though I liked Brother, because I have too much of a backlog of other films and shows to watch with a focus on dissident material and the first one wasn’t that. However, multiple people thought the sequel was better than the original (which is uncommon), so I thought why not and watched it too.

It’s a strange film and much looser and more poorly plotted than the original. For example, the revenge plot isn’t clear - who is responsible for the main character Bagrov’s friend Gromov’s death, is it the mob boss who didn’t mean to order the hit but his loose orders were wrongly interpreted? Is it the NYC corrupt high-flyer who stole Bagrov’s friend’s brother’s wealth which set events in motion (and whose fate isn’t shown)? It’s messy.

Other than the core plot problems, the sequel is a fish out of water tale involving a post-Soviet Russian in NYC with all the cultural issues that arise from that, it’s a tale of military-background derived brotherhood (a smart switch from focusing on blood relations from the first film, although Bagrov’s brother features prominently as well (and I appreciate that he had a redemption arc)), and it also focuses on the predatory nature of Western capitalism, poor American race relations, and how atomized everyone is (to the point where Gromov’s brother didn’t really care about his brother’s fate and wouldn’t help out Bagrov even with a place to stay; he only cared about money even though he was being predated on). This is contrasted with Bagrov, who feels brotherhood not only with his brothers, both blood and friendships, but with all Russians, even a low class Russian prostitute being ripped off by her pimp. So from this perspective the sequel felt fresh and perhaps it’s a bit dissident. I didn’t fully know where the plot was going and I appreciated the looser, more free-wheeling nature of the film. It did swerve fairly close to parody, though, and I can see why Sergei Bodrov (the main actor) stated that he didn’t want to make a third film in the series - in what direction to take it without it becoming outright parody?

The runtime was 2 hours vs. 1 hour 30 from the first film, and this one didn’t hold my interest as much as the original. But I still recommend it as an experimental fish out of water story highlighting the ugly downside of American capitalism and how trying to maintain brotherhood in it’s different manifestations is some way of trying to push back on it’s encroachment, even if the results are/were limited.
