i know nothing about hockey. can someone break down the golden goal and tell me what was good or bad about the whole play.
my retarded analysis is that it was a fastbreak, and the pass/assist was totally on the money, and the jew made a good but standard 1-on-1 shot that was 50/50. seems like the goalie didnt totally fuck up and the jew didnt totally do something amazing, an that pass was really great.
but i dont have a clue. educate me

look at the very start of the play. it's 3x3 so you want to avoid at all costs a fast break by the opponent. you don't have a defender playing free safety.
the Canadian, McDavid, tried a one-on-three attack toward the US goal but was dispossessed.
Makar (canadian) was in a relatively defensive position but made a fateful decision to "pinch," meaning he moved forward to cut off the americans and steal the puck back. it's a little like a cornerback going for a pick when the receiver runs a down and out. if the pinch works your team gets another shot in the offensive zone and the opponent is bottled up once again. if the pinch doesn't work then then potentially the opponents are off and flying. maybe he assumed that if he failed his team mate MacKinnon could play defense.
in this case Makar's pinch failed. all three americans (Werenski, Larkin, and Hughes) and only one canadian defender (MacKinnon) were involved for the next few seconds. Hughes saw his two team mates on the right side of the ice so he drifted over to the open ice on the left.
the canadian defender, MacKinnon, has been faulted for moving over to play the US opponent, Werenski, positionally (cutting off the line to the goal) when MacKinnon should have "played the puck" to break up the play. that strikes me as second guessing to some degree. it's a tough spot to be in -- altho admittedly MacKinnon appears to have had a chance to just nudge or slap the puck and disrupt the play.
Werenski pushed MacKinnon off the play, pulled up, and fired back to Hughes who was positioned and ready. notice how Larkin, the american team mate, initially moves to take the puck from Werenski but then backs off so Werenski could pass.
and notice how the other two Canadians (McDavid and Makar) are rushing back but are too late. Makar is the last to arrive. he must have felt like a cornerback who took a risk and now has to sprint back while watching the opponent score a TD. [edit: pumo below made a good point i hadn't appreciated: Makar was inexcusably slow in getting back. maybe he was hoping that canada would regain the puck and he (Makar) could cherry pick a golden goal, given that all three Americans had committed to the offensive end?]
Hughes' shot is in the 5-hole, meaning between the goalie's knees. when the goalie comes out of the goal to cut down the shooter's angle it's nearly impossible to keep the five hole closed.

I would also add that Makar really fucked up by taking his sweet time to get back to cut off the pass. He was probably expecting MacKinnon to take the puck and get him the outlet pass for a breakaway on the other end.
This all started with McDavid trying to be a hero by taking it into the off zone by himself against the 3 Americans

tyft, i hadn't fully appreciated the way that Makar took his sweet time getting back.
look at this view, which proves your point. what the fuck was Makar thinking?

CR. Makar fucked up initially and then fucked up again in deciding to hold off on getting back. I guess you could argue it was a tactical choice to do so, because if the US doesn’t pot it, there’s a good chance Canada has a 2v1 or 2v0 in the other direction. It looks really shitty in tandem with the failed pinch and end result, though.

I think the impact of a great player in hockey is greater than it is in baseball and perhaps less than it is in basketball. It's still a big impact though. Gretzky won four Cups but he did it all with another Hall of Famer on his team. One thing that people don't realize about Gretzky is that he wasn't just great, he was like twice as good as the next greatest player. There's an argument that Gretzky would have been the greatest player of all time if he had never scored a single goal just on assists alone, and he scored the second most goals ever behind only Ovechkin who recently surpassed him. And even Gretzky couldn't win a Cup with the LA Kings and basically no support although he did take them to a Cup final.
You can definitely argue that McDavid doesn't have a ton of support around him, and he twice ran into a buzzsaw. The Oilers are a bum franchise who were in last place for like 20 years before McDavid showed up. He does have a little help in Draisaitl who is probably a Hall of Famer if for no other reason than that he's the greatest German hockey player of all time. But they've had shitty goaltending. Also the taxes are absurdly high in Canada and the provinces they're all taking above 50 cents on the dollar. Tough in the salary cap era to get free agents to go up there when you can keep 10% more of your salary each year. (Teams from Florida and Nevada have won like 5 out of the last 7 Cups or so)
I think if McDavid played for any American franchise that spends to the cap and cares about winning (sorry Flyers fans) he would have won 2 already imo. He's carrying a load up there. I say this all as a goofy extremist McDavid apologist.

A small 180 piece of this: At 12 seconds in the video below, 2 US players are to the right of the Canadian goal, one up the ice from the puck, one behind the puck. You can see number 21, with the puck in front of him, about to take it. But number 8 has an angle for the pass and reaches back for it, opposite of his momentum. 21 pulls up and lets his bro get the 18000 assist.

With three on three you have to prioritize keeping the puck over taking chances, and only go deep when if you can get back in the play with your momentum if you lose the puck. Connor hero balled it against three defenders, caused a counter attack, and forced his teammates to make some difficult decisions and the US played the opportunity perfectly. Thing is though Canada won a previous OT game against Czechia on a goal by Marner where he attacked the net in a similarly disadvantaged, potentially risky situation.
Really though 3v3 is nowhere like actual 5v5 hockey and they shouldn't go to OT in that format.
