East Paterson, NJ changed its name ‘cause it didn’t want to be associated with Paterson.

They changed the name to Elmwood Park in the 1970s. The mayor of Paterson proper threatened to change the name of Paterson to West Elmwood Park to get them back.

West New York is particularly galling because

(1) It's name is twice removed from York

(2) It's in New Jersey, which is also named for another place

Ever notice how lots of cities are named “New” something or other (New Canaan, New York, New Providence, New Haven, New Hope, etc.) but very few cities are named “Old” something.

Old Harbor, Alaska on Kodiak Island comes to mind but I’m at a loss to name others.

Imagine the downgrade from being named after a country (New Amsterdam) to being named after a city.
