There's a sort of spiritual successor to that movie that's not nearly as good but still pretty fun called The Insufferable Groo, which is about a prolific no-budget fantasy filmmaker who got Jack Black to appear in one of his movies. It lacks the incredible sense of time and place that American Movie does, but it's def. worth a watch.

but the movie blew my 12 year old mind (gorgeous Paul Walker, need I say more?) so I basically forgot about everything else, and assumed I’d blown any chance of seeing her again so just didn’t worry about it once we hugged each other goodbye after the movie…

little vera (1988) - a late-soviet film about the impending demise of the soviet system as depicted through the life of vera, an aimless and somewhat slutty young woman

betty blue (the extended version) (1986) - possibly the ultimate film about dating a needy BPD girl, and why it doesn't work. arts chicks seem to love it, but they draw the wrong lessons.
