I never found the "service" on Spirit or Frontier any worse than any other domestic airline.
What service even is there anymore on any airline?
It's more about the annoying rules, like having to measure all your carryons and the added anxiety that they'll spring a surprise $100 charge on you if your backpack comes out to be half an inch too big or something.

Size i.e. no of aircraft.
In terms of service, Spirit isn't all that different from the main legacy carriers. I recently went to Orlando and it was fine. On time and aircraft was new.
But if your flight is cancelled, United will have the next flight within a few hours. And if they don't, they'll send a plane from the nearest hub. Spirit cannot do that. So your next flight maybe the next day or something.
