I thought the Chili Peppers were geniuses in high school but when I grew up I realized they were a glorified singles band. After you get burned out on the hits you realize they didn't have any deeper cuts or really anything to say that wasn't a big radio hit produced by Jews. I probably have their top 10 songs so committed to memory that I never need to hear them again.

They definitely didn't have the same attitude as the rock music that succeeded them in terms of the tone and swagger of the performance but you have to at least admit that they were songwriting geniuses given that Cocker's most famous song is a cover of theirs. They had 20 #1s.

for sure. top notch material. but often so much better in others hands. on top of the attitude, don't really find mccartney or lennon to be particularly nice vocalists. harrison's contributions hold up the best there imo.

Disagree. Listen to some of their new remasters. When stereo first came out they made some really retarded mixing decisions. They went back and used AI to isolate everything and made proper stereo mixes. They're much better now. I think the vocals sound even better now that they're not all panned to one side and other dumb shit because nobody understood stereo at the time.

i'll give it a try.

on the mix, i remember trying to listen to one of their more famous songs - can't even recall which one - and the audio simply walked back and forth left to right. which probably seemed artistic and interesting at the time, but was just obnoxious to listen to

I think even John Lennon thought that the mixes sucked. At the time the band wanted to do everything in mono because that's what everyone was used to and stereo was a new technology. But the record company pushed stereo hard even though no one knew how to do it right. It wasn't until AI that they were able to get separation of the tracks and it could be mixed properly in stereo.

Agreed. Springsteen really went hard into the politics so he could be friends with Obama and Stern and Clooney and all those people. And his message is so silly it's just like we're the good guys because we do good things and the bad guys do bad things. It's for people with a 3rd grade education tops. I've always hated that guy and his shitty music.

Yeah I think a lot of it is due to over exposure you just get so used to something. Like are you really going to listen to Dark Side of the Moon one more time probably not. If you can't hum all the solos by now what are you doing. Classic but burned out on it.

My tastes have also expanded so much that now I find myself spending more time listening to stuff that's new to me than I do relistening to what I had on repeat during high school

I go through 3-6 month phases where I listen on repeat to a few bands in a genre and then move to something else for awhile

Apropos of nothing you remind me of one of my friends growing up. He was a bodybuilder who tried to join the military but his mom made up a bunch of shit about him so he couldn't join. He ended up becoming extremely jacked and enormous.

He was really into black and white thinking and had extreme views on everything. If you tried to argue with him he'd flip out. Ended up getting married to a chick and they receded from the world together and barely communicate with anyone else.

The only genre of music he liked was death metal and he only listened to the most obscure bands. He had the most esoteric criteria for liking something. It had to be a demo record made between 1985 and 1993 or something. It amused me to catalog the nuances of his unusual musical preferences. Anything that did not meet this highly specialized criteria was ex communicated. He wouldn't consider it at all.

I'm not saying you're like him in every way but you just remind me of him sometimes. What's funny is that he became a lib eventually but he was one of the most influential people in turning me conservative. His rigorous argumentation and legal mind for splitting unbelievably tiny hairs pushed me over to the other side. Last I heard he was some sort of Bernie Bro obsessed with single payer health insurance. I think he really wanted the government to give him steroids or something.

Never really been into much metal, but have gotten into it more recently when lifting. XO actually got me into Metallica back in like 2018, but beyond that haven't really listened to much. Starting to really like Pantera and Kublai Khan, TX. Growing up has meant a gradual broadening of my music taste, never used to be able to enjoy chill or melancholic music and now I listen to Fleetwood Mac a lot.

Yeah his mom was genuinely insane. She cleaned out his dad in the divorce and got everything. His dad lived in a trailer and drank alone and she lived in a huge house in the suburbs. And later on she sued him again to pay for their son's college tuition and won. Not sure how this guy survived.

I'm glad you like Fleetwood Mac. This guy didn't even listen to any mainstream metal. His favorite bands were Morbid Angel, Death, and Bathory.

A friend of mine growing up was THE BIGGEST Dave Matthews fan of all time and he could not physically make it through a conversation with somebody else without mentioning his love of DMB. And we all clowned on him and made fun of him for like 10 years straight and eventually he woke up one day and was like yeah they suck. But he was kind of sensitive about it so we never mentioned it, he just phased it out of his personality one day.

College chicks were all rubbing one out while listening to The General. Must've meant something at the time. If they had one other song that wasn't The General I've never heard of it.

Edit: they seemed to have a lot of music talent not to have been bigger. But wasn't their shtick like not being commercial and trying too hard? I think if they had made one more radio hit they would have all gotten rich off touring but instead they seemed like they went to go live in a van and do shrooms or something. Bizarre career arc.

Yeah, 100%. None more than NoFX, they were my favorite band growing up and now it just sounds like garbage to me.

The funny thing is that a far worse life outcome is if you still liked NoFX. Many such cases and they are one of the worst bands ever to achieve their level of fame and success.

I don't listen to any of the 90s bands really anymore and kind of cringe when I hear them.

I'm not going to list all of them but i would never tune into STP or Green Day or whatever I listened to at the time.

Here are my big ones:

pavement (truly sucks, wow, every normal person was right)

smashing pumpkins (his voice is now impossible to hear. never bothered me as a kid. i used to listen the fuck out of siamese dream. must have been a top 1%er)

90s bands that i still listen to are Blur, Radiohead, NIN, Air

I'm still a fan. Not a superfan where I would defend them to the hilt but on a case by case basis still enjoy some songs. They were at their best when they took their whacky instincts and packaged them into a palatable pop format. Ironically these were the songs Stephen hated the most.

I also listen to AIC more frequently because it's great workout music (I do beginner pilates 2x a week)

I listen to bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre *more* often now than in the 90s, probably because I didn't burn out on them.

STP still holds up although the philistines on xo will bash me for this. Tiny Music is a legitimate masterpiece.

I knew a guy who was a huge Radiohead fan who disowned then later in life primarily because he believed they were "too mainstream". His whole persona became that anything that was widely known was not good. It had to be obscure to be good. He went nuclear on the hipster ethos. To him only totally unknown bands were worth their salt. They had to have less than a hundred fans. Really outré life decision but I even never heard this guy say Radiohead sucked. He just said that's not who I am anymore. I'm this other guy who's only into the underground scene.

That's not a hot take, that's 100% true. AMSP blows. I actually saw them perform some of the material from that album live. They told the crowd it was the debut and it was brand new material. No one in the audience clapped or was engaged with it at all. I read somewhere that Thom couldn't even bring himself to finish the record and left the studio with it half done and told the band to finish writing it for him. I don't know if that's true but it seems correct given how bad it is.

IIRC Burn the Witch, Identikit, and TLW were all reworked songs. All should have been left alone off the album imo. The song titles on the album were all in alphabetical order which I never understood or heard a good reason why. Weird just to be weird I gues.

Half of these were new to me

- Everything In Its Right Place: a little too fractured/noisy for me

- Optimistic: not bad but didn't do much for me

- Idioteque: don't like, too EDM-y for me

- Pyramid Song: not sad enough to enjoy this

- I Might Be Wrong (Live): great riff, felt like it really would have been better if it built to more of a crescendo like a third or so of their songs do

- There There: as is a common theme with many of these, liked the last third much better than the first two

- Black Star: I like this a lot, very listenable chill rainy day music. Guitar work is great.

- True Love Waits (Live in Oslo): very easy listening, enjoyed a lot

- Just: I like this quite well, follows the structure of some of their best songs. I think they're best when largely playing atonal rock, rather than some of their more experimental/noisy stuff like Everything In Its Right Place.

- You and Whose Army: first half a little too waily for me without much instrumentation. I think one of the things I like best about the Radiohead I do like is their riffs.

- Talk Show Host: again, first half too slow and the build isn't to a satisfying conclusion like, for example, I find Iron Lung to have

You might like Exit Music for a Film (really big build up), Electioneering (fast paced blues riff), and The National Anthem (chaotic atonal ending). You seem to gravitate towards their heavier alt rock phase and not their slower, moodier melodic side. There is nothing wrong with that. I am not a pretentious fan who thinks there's a right or wrong way to appreciate them. I like them so much I'm happy when anyone gets on board at all.

My overall recommendation is to get a copy of The Bends and OK Computer (OKNOTOK 2017 remaster is POTUS tier) and wear those records out. That's really their straight up rock era. The later stuff may or may not grow on you over time. It is moody and melancholic for sure. I just think the melodies are so good they're absolutely arresting but you don't have to agree. I'm glad you liked Black Star, one of my favorites and not too many people know that one.

They were stylistically like a 10 and a 2 at actual songwriting. Incredibly cool ambiance band with no actual memorable songs. You can only listen to it for the vibe but no one can actually recall any individual song because there's no discernable melodies or differentiation between the songs.

KMFDM suffered from not having any proper songwriting talent. They had attitude for days and had an edgy image but their songs are unlistenable trash. That guy could not pen a tune to save his life but it was an objectively cool band concept.

Were Of Montreal and Boards of Canada different bands?

considering you just asked if of montreal (notable for front man's singing) and boards of canada (an electronica band with no/little vocals) were different bands i think you couldn't pick them out of a line up because the only thing you know about them is that their name involves canada.

Right but I fault them for that, not me. The customer is always right. If you put out bland pablum you're going to get mistaken for something entirely different, yet spiritually the same.

but you've clearly never even listened to them if you could confuse them with with boards of canada. this isn't some musicfaggot pretentious take, they are completely different genres. it would be like asking of miles davis and david bowie are the same.

False I guarantee you they have countless overlapping stylistic elements. It's all colourless indie mumbling and bad melodies no one can recall. Isn't that Enough?

There seems to be some guitar work and live vocals on it as well, hence the Industrial moniker. A hybrid of rock and electronica.

i saw of montreal a couple years ago and they put on a 180 show.

they are definitely huffing their own farts and i can see why someone would fall out of love with them. i like them in the same way i like pop-punk sum41 shit where it's a fun throwback to a more dumb and naive part of my life.

Pearl Jam is incredibly corny in the long run. There's only so much you can take.

Still like Arcade Fire but they had a small number of truly great songs. Not a massive discography.

Muse early albums still slap. The later you go it becomes trash. Eventually it becomes utter garbage. I don't know why he ruined his own brand.

Silversun Pickups gave up after modest success. I don't think they ever wanted to be huge or something. They have 1.5 good albums and then crap.
