a good quality microphone is one that (1) records the sound clearly and cleanly, obviously, AND (2) has good directionality and polar patterns, i.e. it is good at capturing sound from particular angles while not picking up sound from other angles, so that you can speak into it at the appropriate angle even in a busy street and it will still mostly pick up your voice and not much of the background street noises
