Assume this works under the salary cap and one of the reasons the Celtics would do it is to avoid having a $500m roster next season.
Do the Mavs do this? They get a generational talent who based on his work ethic and age is likely to come back healthy after missing all of next season. Celtics get salary relief and bring the lifelong Celtics fan and Maine native home.
Who says no first?

"He's a much better competitor than Luka, cares way more about winning and being great"
luka has the 2nd highest playoff points average in nba history, second only to MJ
tatum regularly disappears when the lights are bright. look at his stats during the finals last year. look at what he did in this series against the knicks prior to last night.
luka also carried an inferior team to the playoffs multiple years in a row. and his gravity/ability to handle being blitzed raises the 3 pt percentage of the people around him.
get the fuck out of here with this nonsense in saying that tatum is a better competitor than luka.

giving up an 18 year old who is expected to play at a high nba level already and the biggest draft pick since lebron (or wemby) for a player who just had an injury that will cost him at a minimum one entire season and if he gets entirely healthy again (no guarantee) has at best 2-3 seasons of truly elite production in him before a long slow decline begins

he has far more than 2-3 seasons of elite production left, achilles are a long recovery injury but you can get back to more or less your old self these days. look at kevin durant.
the argument for dallas doing it would be:
- kyrie is injured next season anyway
- tatum is a better roster fit, with flagg they have a glut of interior guys and he probably can't play SF in the nba
- tatum is obviously proven while flagg is not
one reason dallas wouldn't do it is because tatum is making $60m next season. but what if i told you the offer was on the table not now, but at the end of next season and here were cooper's stats in his rookie year: 12.3 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg, 35% from three in 28 minutes per game.

Horford - utterly cooked
Porzingis - no ability to stay on the court whatsoever. KAT dominated offensively and on the boards. Knicks had an absurd number of rebounds.
Holiday - he is signed for like one million years into the future but can't play offense whatsoever. He was a great defender and a character guy in his prime. He will be making 37 million dollars in his age 37 season. They really bought this guy at the top of his market. He's already out of gas and that's a bad sign.
But the elephant in the room is obviously Jalen Brown who is a 50 million dollar player who scores 20 points and was terrible in the clutch this entire series. I think you have to look into moving him. If Brad wants to be aggressive and is looking at how to win multiple championships, you look into acquiring a different superstar to pair with Tatum when he comes back. You're now scrambling to find the next Pau Gasol or an AD, someone who can be Robin to Tatum's batman. Because last night Tatum looked like Kobe and Jalen Brown looked pedestrian.

The new "owner" is just some managing partner of a PE firm. Who knows who really pulls the strings. The money could have all come from Vladimir Putin for all we know.
The main goal of the firm is to cut payroll and tank until they can build an arena in Everett and stop having to pay the Bruins rent money anymore. The Emir is probably happy they don't have to make a single win-now move this off-season. Just blow it all up, get some young unproven prospects, wait for Tatum to come back. In 2027 you go package all your newly acquired prospects and send them to some poverty franchise for a perennial All-Star and load up for 2028.
Where is Danny Ainge when you need him? This is his bread and butter. Trading Al Jefferson for KG.

Brad is sneaky good at dumping salary and getting some return. Some of his salary dump moves in the past two years that people thought were just throwaways actually got valuable players back the other way. Do I think they're going to package up some of these guys in exchange for any big name superstar players? No. I'm not delusional.
At this point you're looking at building for a championship run in 2028. There's 2 types of players Brad needs to target, prospects and role players. A big issue this season has been a lack of depth on the bench. Danny was much better than Brad at filling out the bench roster, and they need to go get some guys who can take up minutes in the playoffs while the starters rest.
I also think Brad needs to consider what a blockbuster trade in the 2027 off-season might look like. If we can acquire prospects now that will be attractive to some other team, we may be able to push all our chips in and go get another star for Tatum to play with. There's always somebody who is unloading a Jimmy Butler or a Kevin Durant type of player. You have to be chalk full of prospects when opportunity strikes.
I think Brad has the capacity to make all the right moves and so far he's been a great GM.

there are two or three teams with enough cap space to absorb more salary than they are sending out. and they will want to be compensated for that, so I think it'll be difficult to get viable role players for these really awful contracts.
their only option might be to trade long-term bad deals for shorter-term bad deals and get picks on top. think someone like bradley beal. but then there is no way they are contending in 2028 and tatum's window is likely gone.
i don't see any good options for them. a full rebuild wouldn't be the worst play.
