my grandfather, a life long farmer who came from spain to puerto rico, was a man of little words. a severe man of basque heritage who claimed to descend from the house of loyola. 6'4", 250lbs of country muscle who had 13 children. At the end, he barely spoke. He would walk around his land and feed the chickens with a bag of feed he left in the front porch. He would then go and take the two horses out of the shed for them to get their legs about them. He would move the one cow he had left from one side of the grazing land to the other. When I would go to visit he would just point and indicate to "come along" without saying a word. My aunt, the dutiful sister who stayed to take care of him, washed his clothes, kept the house and made his meals to his specifications.

the last time I saw him, about a month before he passed away. He was eating quietly on his porch and was about to get up to do his "daily constitutional" and he gave me the same point and nod to come along and help. I did this. The whole thing takes about 3 hours. As we were coming back he changed the routine--he grabbed me by the arm and led me, very slowly, around the house to the front. He looked around and pointed all around him. He then said the last thing he ever said to me...in a slow, farmer's spanish. "all that you can see that I'm pointing at belongs to me. I made this. I kept this with my own hands." and he gave me a withering look and made his way to his rocking chair. and that was that.
