Example:
2025.10.1 - Motion to Dismiss (7 digits plus periods)
OR
2025.10.01 - Motion to Dismiss (8 digits plus periods)
I think that many firms use the 8 digit variety, but why? What is the purpose?
I use the 7 digit version, but might start using the 8 digit in January

It’s a suffix you append to the end of the excel file so you know which version is the latest and when it was created. Seems to be the best way to go about it.

looks classy and readable. OP's periods look gay and european, plus oldmos would never use a period in the name of a file bc it could get confused with a file extension
7 digits vs 8 prevents sorting

We may have worked for the same man. He assured me that having four digits for the date was only necessary "for now" to avoid ambiguity between which digits were the day and which were the year. He excitedly pointed out that once the year 2032 rolls around, he can change the format to 01JAN32 because such confusion will no longer be possible.
