these boomers are sitting on a $5M home. buying a $5M home in most states would give a similarly huge property tax bill. nothing to see here.

While the Priebes had bought the home in 2002 for $650,000, it was now assessed at over $4.4 million.
Heartbreaking

lol @ people ITT acting like the assessed price means shit.
Florida's housing market is retarded and notoriously volatile. Homes that were "worth" $2 million earlier this year are already down 20%. Hopefully their tax bills stay the same though, because fuck Floridians.

Stupid thread:
1. We can easily compare property taxes by state - and FL is middle of the road (and 1/3 that of places i the northeast like NJ and CT).
2. FL actually has huge protections for homeowners from increases - these people just lost it because they tried to keep the foundation but otherwise build a mansion on the beach. They obviously knew this was a risk because they were emailing regulators trying to thread the needle.
It's perfectly plausible that the regulators gave them bad advice or went back on their word - but its also plausible the regulators would say we're not getting the full story and these people tried to pull a fast one.
Either way, this has nothing to do with Florida - which has middling property taxes and reasonable protections against increases.

And also compensates with 0 state income tax. For high earners that is worth more than that entire tax bill.

NY/NJmos, remind the board what a $5m property pays in taxes.
