-Xi is massively shaped and hardened by watching Tiananmen Square unfold as a up and comer in a far flung province. He had to that point been active mainly as a proponent of economic development and liberalization, but post-June 1989 (and no doubt watching Gorbachev’s fate play out over the next 15 months) he’s convinced of the importance of strict, centralized social control and resistance against cultural/civic liberalization.
Someone needs to make this as a 6 part mini series on a streaming service. The great powers conflict likely resolves because one side or the other can finally get rid of its boomer leaders and all their self-obsessed bullshit. |
