By "rock" I mean anything similar to stuff you used to hear on AOR radio back in the day and its progeny (like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.).
I mean I am sure there are bands out there making rock music but it isn't popular like it used to be.
Maybe I am just old.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Greta van Fleet
Geese
I don't necessarily like all those bands but those are all post 2010 success stories. It definitely happens. More commonly in the British Commonwealth than the USA. You can obviously make it big in rock. The generation before that had White Stripes, Kings of Leon, MCR, FoB, Panic, TBS, Linkin Park and countless more. So yes it's diminished but it's not gone. If someone had a lot of talent they would rise to the top.

I wonder how teens perceive older music these days.
Until I got to college, I was allergic to anything that came out before I turned ~10. That might be a normal teenage knowitall thing. But there was a lot of genuinely fresh stuff coming out in the 90s, and I wanted to be at the forefront of it.
It would be *mindblowing* to me if there's a bunch of 16yos walking around right now with a reflexive dislike of anything that came out before 2020.

There's a weird Gen Z resurgence of fandom for deftones. They blew up really big on TikTok. Kids walk around in deftones shirts now.
Rock is still really popular. It's not that fewer people like it. It's that new rock of high quality isn't being produced. That's the million dollar question. Why can't new unestablished artists make it at the highest level
No one can explain. But rock is still huge and even bigger in Canada and UK.

it has been for like 20 years at least as far as new music
people still like and remember the old stuff so its not dead in that sense

Yes, it appears dead. Kids aren't taking the time to learn to play instruments, jam with their friends, form bands, and tour around to try make it. Those are necessary for the rock ecoystem. They're the prerequisites to having rock music.
Anyway, here's the full movie of Rock N Roll High School without commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRuuL1jaeJE

there is actually so much of it now that people can record cheaply at home.
I listen to a bunch of "new" indie bands that are fucking great that no one has ever heard of (Beach Vacation, for example) that would have been utterly epic in 1994 or whatever. But yeah no one gives a shit now

it's fine
all worthwhile culture is going under the radar so it can actually produce itself as itself
there has been so much damage done to the scenes that produce it by these "libs" and "cons" faggots warring over a corpse that it will likely take years to recover

Virtually impossible to write an original hit rock song with 70 years of rock corpus and I don't know why anyone would expect it to happen
Would you expect someone in 2026 to compose a legendary classical piano piece?
Way easier to write a hit song and break the glass so to speak in weird new music genres
