They backed his army for a few years before he had proven himself. After a few years of proving himself, China offered to back him some more, but instead he said "fuck you, we're good enough to be self sufficient now. Fuck off."
But Nixon went to China in 1973 so Pol Pot's independent spirit earned him no friends in Washington.

Yes but the calculus was made that the American public did not want to see any news about Vietnam at all. Hollywood wouldn't touch it until at least a of decade after we pulled out. The only exceptions were Coming Home and The Deer Hunter, both of which focused on events that happened in America after the war, and Apocalypse Now, which doesn't even attempt to be realistic. And even that was considered "edgy" at the time.
There was no other argument ever raised against it. On the one side Holbrooke was saying "we should repair relations right now" for 20 years on repeat, and on the other side you just had desire to avoid controversy. It didn't even matter who the president was because Brzenzinski was there the whole time cockblocking Holbrooke. That should be a movie plot: 20 years of senseless starvation caused by an embargo that accomplished nothing.
