I watched Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (1991) about the making of Apocalypse Now. In many ways the story behind the film is more interesting than the film itself: based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, it was deemed to be unfilmable because of how difficult and strange it was thematically (and others including Orson Welles had tried). Fresh from the success of The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2, Coppola self-financed and took a mortgage out on his home (with his wife’s blessing, even though they had multiple young children! Wow!) in order to make the film. During filming in the Philippines, which went way over budget and took forever to complete, Martin Sheen had a near-fatal heart attack, the helicopters they were using kept being recalled to fight against insurgents nearby, Marlon Brando showed up to set enormously obese (for the time; not that bad compared to today) and had to be shot in shadow, just his face, and a monsoon destroyed most of the sets, which then had to be rebuilt. Worst of all, the script had no ending, and up until the end Coppola was agonizing about how to finish it; he ended up having to shoot weeks worth of improv between Sheen and Brando in the hopes of coming up with something. My main takeaway, though, was Coppola’s dedication to his creative vision; what strength to be able to oversee a production like this and come out of it in one piece, and successfully to boot.
Coppola recently tried his hand in his old age (he’s 86) with Megalopolis, which I have not seen but the reviews were bad and it was a massive flop. He self-financed this one too. Good for him for trying, though, pushing himself even in his old age.
It is the creative spirit that makes life worth living.
