How come China, with so much continuity, never invented anything?

Ummm...Confucius?? Sun Tzu? Lao Tzu? Mencius?
There's tons of them and they are foundational to Eastern culture and science, just as those ancient birdshits you named are foundational to Western culture and science.

Gunpowder and printing. China also distilled spirits thousands of years ago. Abacus, paper money, crossbow.
Zu Genghi developed the volume of a sphere: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zu_Gengzhi
Jia Xian described Pascal's triangle 1,000 years ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jia_Xian
China had tons of intellectual shit going on it just was operating independetly of the west
Also I'd say that Confucinism and Daoism are foundational to a lot of Asian culture in China and beyond
Also China has lots of old novels, such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_of_the_Three_Kingdoms that predate or are contempraneous with European literary works

What exactly is your point here? China has tons of ancient historical figures that were geniuses in math or science, but only in recent times has there been real exchange between east and west, so of course any scientific developments or breakthroughs in Europe will not build off of what was discovered in China, or vice versa.

The west basically did nothing of lasting importance until the Renaissance either. 1000k years of the Roman empire and its successor states produced basically no knowledge that carried forth. At least China progressed in technology somewhat with the compass, gunpowder, big civil construction projects, the first modern-ish bureaucratic system which lasted for a very long time, etc.
People meme on education now because of our system at this particular point in time but there's a reason we emphasized it so much historically in America and the West as a whole. The invention of modern analytical thought and education system was what allowed the West to tear ahead after a millennium of stagnation
Also in before nyuug bumps this until 2050

they did invent stuff, just less than white people, who went through the scientific and industrial revolutions first, so this shouldn't be surprising
the better question is why do they still invent way less stuff than white people

white people still invent way more stuff per capita than chinese
since nobody else in this thread has actually proffered an explanation, i'll say that i think it's because europeans were selected for the capability to think in abstract terms (relative to other pops). everything about europeans - values, behavior, culture - happens at a higher level of abstraction relative to non-europeans
this isn't necessarily A Strictly Superior characteristic, or inherently Good, but it did lead to europeans being more inventive, among other competitively advantageous consequences for them

Scientists in China just made one of the most important scientific discoveries of the last century.
