I think this has to do with Klosterman’s theory about the vanishing future. The internet has made it so the 90s never left. There’s no clear break with the past like Nirvana ending the 80s. So the era continues to live on in the culture (e.g. Friends and Seinfeld still Top 5 tv shows by hours watched) preventing us from developing a collective Nostalgia for the 1990s.

Yes, but not a period piece. Lots of movies reflect their times (Clerks is great), but the 90s are massively underexplored by people from another, later time reflecting on the historical era and what it MEANS now that culture has some distance.
