People complain about gen-x here a lot, i do as well, but they do some 180 things.
Example, a palantir coder developed a software program that police, etc can use to triangulate cell phones. Mostly prior work and open source stuff and about a weeks worth of coding and testing. Its mostly just a gui front end that illiterate cops can use.
Palantir charges a big fee per year to each agency to use it and the coder gets a cut. Dude is pulling down enough that he never has to work again.
This is the future of compensation and has driven incredible innovation. Companies that don't adopt similar methods will die out or be acquired by those who do.

It's a great deal for someone with the intelligence and, more importantly, the drive to be successful. That is not most employees.
When I was starting out in PE, I naively assumed that I could compensate managers using those nifty equity incentives about which one reads in the Wall Street Journal. As I acquired portfolio companies, I came up with a variety of incentive plans, from simple to complex, by which a motivated manager could earn lots of extra money. They all fell flat. Not saying there aren't people out there who would take advantage of such a thing, but most people who are smart and aggressive enough to take advantage of an employee incentive program are not employees; they are already out there running their own businesses.
With rare exceptions, you just don't encounter employees who want work hard in exchange for any kind of variable compensation. I'm not sure my incentive plans, with which I don't even bother any more, earned me a single extra dollar of profit.
