Far from being the “close minded, conservative Christians” christians are typically demonized to be, they were actually open minded about this crazy ass group taking over a massive parcel of land near their town. The incoming group sure wasn’t fretting about whether what they were doing would affect anyone else or asked people to find out more, they steamrolled right in with a new age sex cult and just expected everyone to “deal with it”, that was their only focus.
-as soon as the townsfolk show concern about all the kooky stuff going on the adherents of the cult start claiming “racism and bigotry of the highest order” - great case study in how buzz words like this are used mostly by the people to tarnish or ruin someone’s character if they have any opposition to their ideas. Again, no thought is given to the fact they literally came in a built a city devoted to their cult ideals with nary a care for how it affected anyone nearby.
- the girl who’s father was the Jonestown reporter!!! Going this is “so different from Jonestown! This isn’t a cult! This is totally different!” Holy shit, the level of delusion.
I just feel bad for the quiet country folk just living there lives when this craziness stormed in. Unlike the Christian “intolerance” you hear so much about in the media, the Christian townspeople were very open minded at first and had no beef with the cult. One of them said the cult members were usually highly educated and looked down on them as backwater people who couldn’t do anything to stop them (they did) and were “educated beyond common sense” (180)
I’m starting to think this should be mandatory viewing for all Americans, just to give the critical thinking muscles a little flex. |

at the same time, the documentary never lets you know for certain taht nefarious things went on. some of it seemed like therapy, so i cant judge them for that. they seemed to suggest that they were brainwashed, but they never explicitly alluded to it, always hinting at it, or not even, just barely. who are we to say these people were nuts and were going to cause each other harm or the community at large? maybe they were peaceful and they got pushed to do the things they did, as they kept saying, for preservation and out of self defence. it was murky.
just from the facts alone, id say they did nothing wrong and the christians were offended by the free sex between young good looking people, while the townsfolk were old and jealous of the good times. |
