Another source, The Balance, estimates that a single Bitcoin transaction required 1,390.49 kWh, the equivalent of power consumption of an average U.S. household over nearly 48 days2. On an average day, 240,000 Bitcoin transactions are sent over the network3.

It’s worth noting that Bitcoin’s popularity and uniquely inefficient consensus mechanism make it an easy scapegoat for its environmental burden. However, the blockchain technology that underlies it could be the key to a greener future1.
