There are a lot of reasons to think this was a real person who caused a big ruckus, because there weren't too many "famous" people who got their iconigraph carved into stellae all over the place. It's like someone in the future discovering the George Floyd murals, except these murals all make it clear this was someone from upstate who was new to these parts AND he was a killer AND he was respected wherever he went.
