Yeah I guess their core audience probably did skew younger. Even though they broke out in like 2002. According to Wikipedia their best known album was fairly credited.
It was rated the best album of 2006 by Punknews[11] and placed at number 74 in NME's list of the one-hundred best albums of the 2000s.[9] Sputnikmusic's ranked the album No. 20 on their list of the Top 100 Best Albums of the 2000s, as voted by staff members,[10] and it was ranked at number 16 in Kerrang!'s "50 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die" list.[91]
In a retrospective review, Ian Cohen of Pitchfork said that "by leaving his words and intentions up to interpretation, Lacey unwittingly shifted from a minor celebrity to a generational voice", giving the album an 8.5 out of 10 and comparing it to other critically acclaimed indie rock records of the 2000s such as Kid A and The Moon & Antarctica.[32] Nina Corcoran of Consequence of Sound credited Brand New for "end[ing] the need to feel ashamed for connecting to emo", noting that the album's influence "altered the path of emo and alternative rock bands at large, blurred genre lines and bolded something beyond the band."

i make bold claims about what?
i think back to 2006... in 2006 i had just met a fuckton of house djs in my city and was spinning records with my roommate in my living room and going out dancing at underground house music events on weekends. like, every weekend. and banging a dude in a weird avante garde quasi-sludge metal band and going to a bunch of metal shows. i think i was actually really into bjork during that time also.
i dont think i was listening to any mainstream or best-selling music at all during that time period other than- hilariously- madonna's confessions on a dance floor album.
its not that i "dont like alternative rock very much", its that i just didnt pay attention to mainstream music during multiple periods of time over the past 20 years
this has been a fun trip down musical memory lane. but yeah, im not surprised i never heard of this band.

honestly i was mostly listening to, playing, and dancing to house music from 2005-2008. pretty much nonstop. (with lots of mars volta also, tbf)
that madonna album was huge because it was a big pop foray into dance music that was clubby but good enough to be accepted by house djs. hence why i ended up listening to it.
but mostly my roommate and i were just playing a bunch of underground vinyl.
and yeah, i went to a fuckton of fun metal shows around my city by various bands. some really kooky shit. fun adventurous 20s type of shit.
and madonna is actually great pop music. stop trying to be such a snob.

i dont think metal is really the same thing as hardcore. at least its not to me.
i love pop music but im aware of what it is. its objectively the simplest form of music and is often pandering to the lowest common denominator and the common man's ear. but that doesn't mean that its not fun to enjoy at times and absolutely 100% gives you dat dopamine rush. if you dont like it, fine. its the musical equivalent of a candy bar. if you dont want to eat it, dont.
