A California man allegedly cooked up a bizarre Lego theft scheme, but police said it came apart piece by piece.

Jarrelle Augustine, 28, of Paramount, is accused of buying Lego sets from Target, removing valuable minifigures and pieces, then returning the boxes after filling them with dried pasta, Irvine police said.

Investigators linked him to roughly 70 thefts nationwide totaling about $34,000 in losses.

The Irving Police Department said detectives used surveillance to identify Augustine as the suspect. He was taken into custody and booked into the Orange County Jail on grand theft charges.

Police shared details of the case in a social media post and added a humorous warning about the unusual method.

"If your master plan involves swapping LEGOs for linguine, we can promise your plan will be cooked al dente," Irvine police said in a Facebook post.

Video released by police appears to show the suspect taking Lego sets from a store shelf and walking out.

The footage then shows officers placing him under arrest in body camera video.

The unusual case also drew reactions online, with some social media users leaning into the humor.

"This case had so many pastabilities. Good for IPD, using their noodle!" one commenter wrote.

"You mean to tell me he was an... impasta?! I’ll see myself out," another joked.

Others questioned the method, with one user writing, "Stealing Legos and Goya beans? WTF?"

Is there anything more painful than cops trying to be funny? My local police does this on Facebook too. I think every PD in America now has some unfunny woman doing PR and social media (the chief’s dumb niece no doubt).

That's because that sort of thing really reasonates with the demographic likely to be reading PD updates on Facebook.

Poor journalism.

>Video released by police appears to show the suspect taking Lego sets from a store shelf and walking out.

So was this return fraud or theft from the shelves or both or did the journalist not bother and just AI’d a press release?

I helped one of my friends do something like this once. He bought an office chair for like $800+, put his old, used, shitty chair in the box, and returned it. Never got caught. This was like almost 20 years ago. Neither of us are Jewish, but we were in that moment.

A friend bought an early non-Apple smartphone from BestBuy.

Being a good goy, he bought the extended warranty.

But that still didn't cover cracked screens. His cracked.

We opened it up, carved a replacement for the glass front out of a CD jewel case with a Dremel.

To our surprise, it was a perfect fit. The phone's case closed back up without a problem.

Returned it to BestBuy. Got a new one.

My proudest moment in a life of crime.

I caught the other end of this a while ago. I bought a sweater online. I knew what I was getting because it was to replace the same sweater that I lost. But when the sweater arrived, it absolutely STANK of gasoline, like it had been soaked overnight in a bucket of gas. Unusable. I returned the product, but they would not honor the return by refunding me or replacing it, they claimed that I must have damaged it. I presume somebody ruined the sweater and sent it back in a plastic bag so they didn't notice and sold it to me. Amex wiped the transaction for me straight away but it was a major pain in the ass.
