all his movies are gimmicky. i actually enjoyed interstellar but all the space-sorcery and magic was ridiculous and having people claim the "science" checked out and made it insufferable. i agree the batman movies were gay. the prestige was kind of enjoyable because of the acting but at the end just more magic and sorcery. all of his movies have stupid deus ex machina shit.

No, katie holmes (8.5/10) was the prosecutrix love interest in Batman Begins, and nolan tried to ludicrously replace her with maggie gyllenhaal (5.5/10) in The Dark Knight and say nothing as if no one would notice.

This should have been an early indicator that nolan views female characters as totally modular / "I have been told the Academy wants at least 2 women; here is my completed script with zero women; jon please go through and insert 2 girl characters."

Pulling a bait-and-switch on a multi-film franchise that relied on you is never a good career move. She could be a nolan regular instead of us having to look at anne hathaway.

3rd movie (by far the absolute dogshittiest) ended with Batman saving Gotham by getting the nuclear bomb a few hundred yards away from the city so it detonated over the water. This was a 4 MEGATON device (= ~250+ Hiroshima bombs) ... It would have instantly vaporized everything within a couple miles and killed everyone in the city.

That's aside from the absolutely atrocious Occupy Wall Street references throughout. And the fact that Bane's BIG REVEAL was a crumpled piece of paper showing two face was bad.

Good question, because he’s most like Spielberg. One of the greatest filmmaker/storytellers of all time and even an auteur in his own way. But I would really struggle to say he’s anywhere near Kurosawa or Kubrick.

He’s kind of like De Palma but less gritty.

2. Neeraj Pandey

3. Shoojit Sircar

4. Sanjay Leela Bhansali

5. Yash Chopra

6. Anurag Kashyap

7. Vishal Bhardwaj

8. Nagesh Kukunoor

9. Sriram Raghavan

10. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Nolan is maybe in the top 15 but you still have guys like Ashutosh Gowariker, Nitesh Tiwari and Dibakara Banerjee in the mix so hard to say.

Do you value a director that makes well made movies that people like? If so, he's probably top 5 all time at this point.

Do you value art for the sake of being art, where you go "Actually The Godfather sucks have you seen this mob movie by this Peruvian director about a lesbian clown - that's real mobster story telling."

There's no director since Spielberg who has his resume.

Nolan is maybe Top 40. Very good at constructing sealed epistemological systems. Less good when a Human enters one. He mistakes epistemology for metaphysics sometimes imo. He can’t crack T20 if duration, negative space, montage, phenomenology, or transcendence are allowed in the room.

My T20 imho:

Bresson

Dreyer

Ozu

Mizoguchi

Kurosawa

Tarkovsky

Kiarostami

Hou Hsiao-hsien

Tsai Ming-liang

Chantal Akerman

Raúl Ruiz

Lars von Trier

Fassbinder

Buñuel

Godard

Sergio Leone

Tony Scott

Kubrick

Welles

Hideo Kojima
