Here's one aspect it that people overlook: when the con men are selling their fake "clothes" to the kang, their sales pitch is that "only smart people can see these clothes." The reason this worked is because everyone who saw nothing would be ashamed to say it. They would believe that 1. the clothes were real, and 2. they themselves were below average intelligence. It was intellectual hubris that made the con effective.
