4yo says his favorite sport is golf. we go to the putting green or the chipping area and he can only really hit the ball properly with me holding the club with him.

at what age can i expect him to have any semblance of ability to hit a ball on his own?

there are definitely kids that young who can hit it ok.

the key is getting them hooked. sounds like you’re already there unless it’s just some short phase.

we have a an artificial putting green that rolls 10+ along with a couple other fairway height(but rolled) greens making for a pretty nice pitch n putt setup and also a mat/net/launch monitor(but not full screen simulator) in the garage.

yet my kids don’t give a shit. maybe because it’s too accessible idk. im guessing at some point at least a couple of them will get into it when their friends do

good advice. yeah, totally not sure if hes hooked or its a phase.

sounds like youve made it waaaaay too accessible. the course is nearby, but it still requires anticipation and effort for us to get to it -- and that makes each trip exiting and something he talks about and looks forward to. but what do i know, im not some parenting mfe.

6 or so seems like when they make meaningful swings. we brought them out to the course a bunch before then but it was just hitting putts and short chips. We now do the chipping greens and started to do the range a decent amount and popped on a crappy Amazon push cart for my son so we both can actually get some exercise.

4yo just keep him happy and engaged and hitting putts and short shots. Dont expect a baby Rory.

I don't have kids but I have nieces and nephews and there is no way you can expect a small kid to do anything like real golf until they are at least twice that age or probably more, Tiger grew up putting and chipping and that worked out pretty well, I'd just stick with that

also proper club size is important. USA Kids Golf looks prole and lame from a marketing perspective but they do a good job with building the proper sized clubs for multiple ages.

I tried with my son, but he complained that it was too hot and he didn't take to it. I don't have any time to go golf with him so it was kind of a waste. Little kids really need to be nurtured. They aren't born with any grit or socially ingrained to strive, strive, strive until they're down on the balls of their ass, palms bleeding with only the faintest glimmer of hope that a eagle will rise, and that greatness will follow.

it's never too early to get kids into golf. ime, the key is to end the session before he gets too hot or tired. you can buy the wiffle balls and have him hit at the park or in your backyard.
