Date: June 10th, 2025 1:11 PM Author: https://imgur.com/a/o2g8xYK Reading the Analects, it's clear that by book 10 you're reading different authors. Even the first five books are of dubious authorship, but by the time you get to book 20 you're in another dimension.
However, all books share the same theme, which is laid out in the first book: this is meant to be a teaching manual for rulers. Back in the day, it was common for Chinese warlords to hire philosophers (and pay them a fortune), similar to how people hire consultants today. Over the centuries, various philosophers were employed by various warlords at various times, and eventually these philosophies became distilled into a handful of thought systems, with Confucianism being the granddaddy that everyone else had to cope with.
Western readers have trouble grasping this, because emotion gets in the way. They roll their eyes at passages that describe filial piety, let alone one's duty to their older siblings. But Confucius* wasn't writing to them, he* was writing to powerful kangz. Furthermore he was offering insights no European would stumble upon for 2,000 years, and that westerners themselves have since forgotten.
This is probably the single biggest reason why China still enrages westerners. Westerners have convinced themselves that Chinese people don't know shit about running a society, they're just hive-like bugs etc. At the same time, they have to cope with China's wealth and success. The cognitive dissonance is driving them insane. People like RSF can't accept that they are inferior thinkers, living in inferior societies with inferior governments. They can't make sense of it because they only have dogshit western thinkers to inform them. Chinese people laugh at these morons for overlooking basic reality, much like TT noticing that "hey, everything actually runs really well in China" while LA burns and NYC turns into Calcutta.

the insights aren't bad but there's nothing profound in there. it's advice like, "play your adversaries off each other," and "distract your enemy with beautiful women." i have LITERALLY read the analects in the untranslated classical chinese that they were written in btw |
