that's how gay things have gotten in 2025
even in a red state you end up having to read through pages of state/county/city bylaws just to set off a box of mortars without having a State Security killteam deployed to your home for waking up someone's two legged 12 year old diabetes cat with a bottle rocket

Proles shouldn't be allowed to play with gunpowder in public.
A house in my neighborhood caught fire last year because of proles playing with large fireworks.
That said, my house rabbits don't really care about the noise. LOL @ peoples' big, bad carnivorous "pets" freaking out.

There's just less space to set them off these days. Everyone used to live a 5 minute drive from the middle of nowhere - now a 5 minute drive in any direction is just another neighborhood.
It is weird how they are just sort of quasi-regulated. I buy small shit for my kids - not really sure if lighting them off in my alley is legal or not.
But you'd think since there's only 4 stands in each county they could sed the cops to each place and put up a sign saying "this is okay here but not here."

These are projectiles, dude.
Nobody cares if proles burn their own houses down or blow their own hands off.
If you're in a gated community surrounded exclusively by the managerial/professional class, great. But that's not how most of us live... it's often not even an option.

(guy at the apogee of the midwit meme graph bulge)
80 IQ prolemaxxers: firework pretty good to celebrate country get people together
105 iq midwits, nannies, urban progressives: VERY WASTEFUL DO NOT WAKE UP DOG OUT OF DATE!!! OUT OF DATE!!!! THESE DECIDEDLY WORKING CLASS AND *wrings wrists* MARTIALLY INSPIRED AMUSEMENTS HAVE BEEN SUPERSEDED BY MY IPHONE 15 PROMAX FIREWORKS APP etc etc really these people are so joyless and tedious about something that is not only an obvious social good but an aesthetic delight as well. holiday haters must all be not only lonely people but the type of stockholm syndrome lonely that causes them to masochistically valorize their own self-imposed suffering
140 IQ gigachads: Why did the Dacians throw their ceremonial spears at Zalmoxis in the sky?
What are the functions of civic rite and ritual?*
What justification needs to be given to celebrate the events of the national calendar other than "it is our custom"?
(and of course, "firework pretty good to celebrate country i.e. national community get people together" underpins all of this as well)
*the fact that these rootless bourgeois fireworks haters (a crowd that dovetails strongly with holiday haters) don't ever even think to consider any of this on a civic-spiritual level---look at the responses itt---shows how far we've fallen as a society. things like this are especially important for the US in particular as well, being a nation less of blood and more of custom, civic identity, and shared values.

180^180 screed that really gets to the heart of the issue
the worst part about these fireworks haters is that they often do it on behalf of PTSD veterans (vets are far more likely to enjoy fireworks than the population average in my experience) and terrified dogs (i guess we should stop thunderstorms from happening too?). it's quintessentially lib behavior where they don't even have the courage to say *they* just don't like fireworks, instead they have to act is they are nobly acting on the behalf of someone else.
when i moved into a bougie new area i poasted on the local subreddit asking whether fireworks were appropriate. this was back when subreddits weren't *as* intolerably libified, as i would not think to ask these people anything today. the responses were as if i asked if it was appropriate to hang nazi regalia and burn crosses in my front yard. then when the 4th came around my neighborhood had fireworks going off everywhere and happy families roaming around. next year i set some off and my neighbors came by to enjoy.
these joyless faggots are stockholm syndrome lonely. they don't live IRL. they're the lefts counterpart to type of terminally online rightwingers we see a lot on xo.

from my own experiences and observations, veterans, cops, firefighters, pretty much anyone actively involved in the "civic life" of modernity all love the holiday (if they're not working on it at least). it's vitalist, it's masculine, it's inexpensive, and it seems spiritually democratic
re PTSD most people think ptsd veterans are all afflicted by a very *cinematic* disorder due to media depictions, where loud noises and visual stressors set off psychotic episodes or intense states of derealization. irl though many if not most ptsd cases you hear about are far less "defined" than that cinematic depiction, with the main symptoms being anomie, depressive states, derealization, and general social dysfunction. there's a lot of misconception about it. i'd have to guess that the healthy social benefit for ptsd-afflicted vets that comes from having an excuse to get out and talk to like-minded people over a beer or two probably outweighs the fractional number of cases that are legitimately set off by fireworks (and for this, there are sleep medications, anxiolytics, and similar anyhow)

A lot of partisan views ITT.
Are all "fireworks" created equal?
I don't remember the huge, professional-level ones (with enough ordnance to burn down half the neighborhood) being available to the public when I was a kid.

those are mortars and i believe you are correct re availability. in my state we usually had a few you could purchase but nothing like the selection you see today.
the other sort of dangerous ones are "roman candles" but that's only really because people monkey-see monkey-do shoot them at each other (which...admittedly is also fun and not any more painful than a teenaged game of paintball) after watching youtube videos
this goes back into something else that i see lamented here in various poasting jeremiads: kids bodies' are a lot more damage-resistant than people give them credit for, and they're not as unaware of the hazards involved in these sorts of activities as the wine aunt busybodies of the world claim on their behalf. it doesn't sit right to hamstring the development of motor-control or endurance or a general sense of physicality of whole swathes of kids, whether it's handlebars or impishness with fireworks or tackle football under the lens as an unprecedented threat to the Safety of our Kids. we've had about fifteen or twenty years of it now; the wages of "safety first" administrative culture have made america's youth fatter, more risk averse, and less physically healthy with not much general benefit to weigh against it. the problem cases seek real danger out regardless of what the law says, and there may even be a sort of dysgenic effect at work there by effectively restricting the development of more law-internalizing but otherwise robust sorts of children with this sort of mentality
chinese fireworks aren't the first example i'd pick for this but they work well enough to illustrate something that i personally find objectionable about the mentalities of today vs the mentalities that brought us america's platonic silver age in the recent past
