Is December 16-23, for example, too early to reliably get good snow in the Rockies these days? Looking at snow reports for this year, things look real, real rough.

A group of about 12 family members and I are looking at places for a ski trip for next year. We want:

(1) A nice town adjacent to the slopes. E.g., Vail, Park City. Not like Jackson Hole, where there is 180 skiiing and a 180 town, but they are not next to each other.

(2) A good shot at decent snow and most of the mountain open by December 15.

(3) Cabins or big condos to rent that can accomodate 12 people.

Where can we find that?

Dang. How risky is it? The timing works out so well because of school closures and lighter end of year workloads. Our kids' spring breaks don't line up, so going over spring break wouldn't work.

Is this site flame? https://www.zrankings.com/articles/best-ski-resorts-for-early-season-christmas-new-years-snow-top-15

They say Vail has 83% of the mountain open by Christmas day, and only 15% of Christmas days have less than 50% open.

Rolled the dice skiing NM and Idaho early this year and was mostly SPS snow, other years it's great. Right now a major storm is snowdicking the west, you just gotta be comfortable with the possibility you'll only have a fraction of the mountain open.

For this year, the snow reports throughout the Rockies look universally abysmal. Very 120.

Do you have recs for Rockies towns where the town and slopes are adjacent? People online are saying Alta and Brighton in Utah are good bets for early season, but it looks like there isn't much by way of a town in either.

My impression for Alta was it's easiest to just stay in SLC and drive to the hill since there's not much going on. Sun Valley and Aspen are prob my two favs in the US. I'm in Sun Valley now and we're getting dumped on, but even when the snow was SPS before was still good times.

That's my impression about Alta, too. Skiing looks great, but no town means it's a ding for us.

How is the town in Sun Valley? Can you get a cabin that is walkable to the slopes and also to bars and restaurants?

Aspen looks crrrr. I've been going to Vail for years and love it. Part of repeatedly returning to Vail is (or was) the notion that it's more reasonably prcied than Aspen. But lately, we're paying an arm and a leg for lodging and everything else in Vail, so maybe we should just go to Aspen.

Yea i think Vail will rape you as hard or harder. It would be tough to get a cabin walkable to everywhere. I would suggest staying at The Lodge in Sun Valley, there's a hotel shuttle to/from town when you go to dinner/out at night and during the day the bus loop goes from right at the hotel to Warm Springs and River Run, takes like ~5min and there are a few restaurants and bars at the SV Resort complex.

12 family members is nbd. Getting them together for a ski week would be a real 180. We've been doing beach weeks together for years, generally with more than 12 of us.

I'd love to ski in Europe (and Japan and South America). It's probably not realistic for this trip given the young kids going and travel times. Maybe in a couple years.

The run in Zermatt from the top of the glacier down into Italy is like 22km, it's fucking sick.

180000 One of my favorite things about Vail is that there are 3+ mile-long runs that are accessible from regular old lifts.

Europe has a lot of resorts with multiple linked mountains where you can just ski forever. Dolimiti Superski has 30,000 acres of terrain, even the place i'm going in Andorra has 6,700 acres.
