For the first time in probably 25 years.
What’s really striking is how dramatically pop culture and Disney has changed (declined) in the past few decades. Specifically:
1) The movie is explicitly pro-family. The main kid’s Dad who refuses to raise him and act as a family unit is portrayed as a huge loser. The foster kids all dream of being part of a nuclear family.
2) Not secular at all. Explicit scenes of praying, talking about God, Heaven and (obviously) angels.
3) No race baiting or LGBT shit at all, even though half the cast is black. In true 90s style, it’s just not worth mentioning or worrying about.
4) Open displays of patriotism. There’s a scene where they are singing the anthem at the start of a game and Adrian Brody’s character is talking about how the song always has emotional impact on him.
Overall very depressing in the context of 2025 America.

Directed by David Kepperman, the 2025 remake features Danny Glover as a Black activist, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a transwoman fighting discrimination in professional sports, and Tony Danza as an ex-ballplayer who has renounced traditional religion.
"There's a touching scene where [Gordon-Levitt] comes out to her family, and undergoes bottom surgery paid for by the league," said Kepperman. "I think a lot of people will appreciate the social justice aspect of the film, especially as we approach the anniversary of George Floyd's murder," he added.
