I think I can see where you are coming from with "aggressive stupidity" and the SP comparison, although it's a really limited analogy. HaTP is someone that is really outspoken and aggressive about his opinions. He is also effusive and his level of verbal fluidity doesn't match his often poor logical reasoning skills and abstraction discipline. But he isn't stupid by any means, it is just a different kind of intelligence than you see with engineers and aspie lawyers who aced the lsat. Spaceporn is also really aggressive about his opinions and often makes logical reasoning errors that don't really match his level of education. HAtp’s style is more associative and rhetorical he argues from the total feel of the facts, shifts emphasis as new points come up, and is very comfortable reframing the dispute around what seems practically or intuitively compelling. On top of that, hatp is aggressively opinionated and gunner is unusually persistent. So hatp's verbal fluency can make a weak inference sound stronger than it is, while gunnerattt’s persistence can make a valid distinction sound pedantic or obsessive. Now you're dredging up another argument by referencing me specifically and claiming I don't let things go, despite the fact you spent the entire weekend screeding, and on our brief subthread I walked away. |

Sam kept trying to get Chomsky to agree that our military endeavors in Africa were still morally good because we supposedly don't try to kill people if we can avoid it and we always have the greater good in mind. Chomsky kept reminding Harris that all the evidence pointed to our malicious behavior and it didn't matter at all if we had high minded morals when we did it. That's just like us, gunner hypothesizes something lofty and I remind him about the facts over and over.
Just like how gunner denies that I engage with the substance, Harris brow-beat Chomsky with the idea that in order for their email debate to continue, Chomsky had to concede Harris' entire point of view. |
