When defenses modernized to the point that a base 4-3 or 3-4 wasn’t the same defensive formation teams ran every down. It was always silly to refer to one of the 3 down lineman in a 3-4 as an “end” as there would basically always be a player outside of him with the actual responsibility to set the edge on the strong side and the down lineman’s responsibilities were what is logically described as a defensive tackle in all other contexts.

Generally you’re conceding that the opponents offensive line can easily fire off at the snap of the ball and engage your defenders standing up with a head of steam and a leverage advantage, some already 2-3 yards past the line of scrimmage. So you’re effectively conceding a “stay ahead of the chains” level of run play success to your opponent and if they have athletic OL who can engage your stand up players and drive them you run a risk of allowing an explosive run play. But if it’s 3rd and long it’s much more logical to see only 2 down lineman and eg if you walk a safety up you can play games with your alignment and which players you send as rushers to confuse the opponent’s OL and QB re where the rush is coming from and which players are dropping to what spots in coverage. Somewhat of a junk defense move, but it’s workable especially if you generally expect to get a decent pressure rate when you rush 4 or you want to send an aggressive blitz and hope your back end players can stay attached long enough to cover and tackle to limit the chances of an explosive play.

What if you had 2 hybrid DE/OLBs, and 2 hybrid MLB/SS and normal defensive roles for the rest

Could you have them fluidly shift between 2-5 and 5-2 at the line of scrimmage on every first and second down, with constant guys in motion in the back field to fuck with the OL and QB?

You still want an adequate number of down lineman at the snap. So in one basic sense the answer to your question is yes. And in a very real sense what you’re describing bears a vague resemblance to the long-term trend with defenses at both NFL and CFB levels ie having a “base” of a 4-3 or 3-4 that you line up with on 90+% of 1st and 2nd downs is like 20 years out of date thinking, and players who are more hybrid and can make plays as pass rushers, run defenders and in coverage are some of the most valuable players a defense can have (other than super elite pass rushers). But you could have all 7 guys in your front 7 do jumping jacks or alternating burpees or whatever to try to mask your alignment, but outside of 3rd and long contexts you’re mostly just making it easier on the OL to fire off the ball and drive you 10 yards down the field before they pancake you. All the counting stats players in the front 7 depend on DTs to close the interior gaps and occupy blockers so they can get to the ball carrier clean or with only a lesser blocker like an RB, WR or TE to beat before they go make a play on the ball.

No that’s an obvious and logical description of the player’s responsibility in both run defense and pass rush situations.

theyre two completely different positions. a defensive end is a player rightfully in a three point stance ready to stuff the run and, if available, get a sack. an EDGE is a greedy little STATPIG who stands straight up, with his arms shaking, jonesing for his next stat with no regard to how the team performs. every SACK he gets will get him an extra 3mm on his next contract.
