Kharkov, btw, was historically an entirely Russian speaking city similar to Odessa.
I would agree that Lvov is definitely the part of Ukraine where speaking Ukrainian is the most common. Nevertheless, most people in Lvov also understand Russian. Did she leave when she was 5 or something? |

Here's the deal with Crimea - it is VERY Russian (more Russian than much of Russia). There are people in Russia who don't speak Russian for a variety of reasons. There are ethnic minorities there too (Crimean Tatars for example). It is possible that there is a tiny village where everyone speaks Ukrainian though again, Ukrainian and Russian are VERY close any generally mutually intelligible. It is also possible that what he calls Ukrainian is actually Surzhyk (an even more Russian version of Ukrainian). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surzhyk

Do you know how I learned Ukrainian? There was a guy in our Kiev office who natively spoke Ukrainian and asked if I minded if he spoke Ukrainian and said he'll just speak more slowly for a few days and once my mind adapts I'll be able to understand him. It worked perfectly. |

Nevertheless, I've never formally studied Ukrainian in my life and nevertheless can easily watch the news in Ukrainian. Zelensky's show is in both Russian and Ukrainian used interchangeably and it wouldn't occur to anyone that subtitles were needed.
And as to this going away, seems likely only for diaspora. |
