seems pretty cr imo. i am trying to bone up on philosophy by reading some intro texts. i randomly downloaded "a new history of western philosophy vol 1" by kenny and its pretty darn good. any recs for other good intro texts? more generally what is the best way to "get into" philosophy. like i am kind of getting into it but i just tried to read up on the "obecjtive subjective distinction" and i wanted to blow my brains out because it seemed so fucking stupid.

If I had to design a philosophy bootcamp is say this.

Get shitty cheap versions of:

Descartes: meditations on first philosophy

Locke: inquiry concerning human understanding

Berkeley: Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous

Hume: An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

Kant: Critique of pure reason

Take one day for each book and read as much as you can in it for 3 hours with serious concentration.

After those 5 days think of any possible topic that interests you and Google it. Read the SEP on the topic as you find it interesting and refer to the most cited philosopher on that subject. Pick up his most important book and start reading it. Skip around if you get bored. Philosophy is all about being interested.

Use that book as a jumping off point into other authors and books as you find interesting. Your crash course should arm you with the tools to understand basic references to the history of philosophy. If you don't understand a reference use it as an opportunity to learn. Always look for something new to read.

starting with descartes? reading 3 hours a day for 5 days and then fucking around on SEP? are you a tard for real?

this guys into neoplatonism let him browse around and pick up plotinus and augustine and whoever else he feels like. ur just substituting philosophy in one arbitrary area of interest for your own arbitrary area

Nah man, if you want to read contemporary philosophy you need to understand the moderns. No one reads neoplatinism their whole life. He asked how to get into philosophy, not neoplatonism

You could probably add Socrates and Aristotle in there but they'd be harder to pin down to one book
