Exactly this is why I say even the smart people among us are still fucking retarded. Humans have almost no ability to anticipate unintended consequences or to project forward into various likely future states, so we continually shoot ourselves in the face and wonder what went wrong as we progress down our path

https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/majority-americans-seize-wealth-ai

To say Americans are divided on AI would be an understatement.

Polls have shown that more people than ever have a negative view of the tech, and you can take your pick on the reasons why. AI could displace jobs, destroy the environment, and drive up energy bills. It’s trained on stolen writing and artwork, and chatbots are driving people into mental health spirals.

But what does the public think should be done about this? A new national survey from Versasight suggests that the majority of Americans are down for taking a drastic course of action.

According to the survey of 1,700 adults, an impressive 69 percent of US employees support forcing AI companies to transfer 50 percent of their stock into a public wealth fund, an idea that has been championed by senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT).

“In the eyes of the public, AI Sovereign funds are seen as a tool to distribute the gains from the AI industry back to broader society,” Verasight CEO Benjamin Leff told CNBC News.

Once at the fringe of political discourse, Sanders took the idea mainstream when he proposed the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act in June. In an essay published in the New York Times, the independent senator argued that the creation of this fund would “give the public a direct role in determining the future of this technology.”

“It would guarantee that the economic benefits generated by AI are used to improve the lives of all of us — not simply to make the richest people in the world even richer,” he added in a statement last month.

The act would target the largest AI companies in the US such as Anthropic and OpenAI, mandating that they submit to a one time 50 percent tax on their stock. At their current valuations, Sanders estimated that this would create a fund worth around $7 trillion. The money in this fund could offset some of the widespread disruption AI could wreak on society, the thinking goes.

Not all AI industry critics are on board. Some have argued that giving the government such a large stake in AI companies would encourage it to clear away regulations, and give AI companies even greater influence over the government than they already have.

You could say it’s a flawed and far-fetched idea, but Americans are on board, perhaps underscoring the desperation for someone to do something about the industry. Even when the policy was explicitly tied to Sanders, the survey found that 64 percent of respondents still supported the idea.

“There is an undeniable desire among Americans of both parties for federal oversight, absolute transparency, and accountability to ensure AI safety and to enable all Americans to participate in the economic benefits of AI,” Leff said in a statement.

That people don't understand that such a sovereign fund would be used on whatever the government wants, just like social security was used in the 1990s on general expenses, is a tragedy of stunted awareness. And, like the income tax that literally started at single digit percentages that only applied on real dollar adjusted income of $100k+, once the concept takes root, it will expand and destroy everything like a cancer

And before anyone accuses me of hyperbole about the income tax expanding like a cancer, let's put aside brackets, put aside quality of life changes, and put aside whatever the fuck "fair share" even means, and simply ask ourselves whether the spending it enabled has pushed us to the brink of bankruptcy. The answer is an unqualified yes

This shit is almost as funny as the "billionaire" tax that will initially affect even $50 millionaires...motherfuckers don't even understand it's the next income tax that will grow until it applies to nearly everyone and at exorbitantly higher rates than the initial ones

Literally the only solution is to put government back into its box at the founding of strictly enumerated powers and authorities with zero allowance to act outside of those things, instead of this mistaken belief that it can do anything and everything that isn't directly prohibited

There is no need for this if you tax the top 1% at 50% rates for income and gains and require taxes to be paid on any unrealized gains used as collateral. Plus 50% death tax with no exceptions.

Whether there would be no need is aside from the point of whether or not the shit you're saying is even a good and just use of government authority in the first place. It's not, and it would suffer from the same unadjusted, slippery slope bullshit as the programs I mentioned

Maybe the one area I can agree with is that taxing the actual loan amounts for certain types of collateralized loans would be desirable. But I'd have to think through that

Or we can have a society where the top 1% own/control more and more of us.

That's also shitty. I'd pick higher taxes on the wealthy rather than have them own everything.

My point is that your choice is almost exactly what existed when the income tax started. Literally single digits of tax were applied to the top few percentage points of income earners

Where is it now? Why do you think allowing this power inevitably creates a large group of tax donkeys without hurting the super rich all that much? Why do you think it would be different now?

Maybe that's the wrong idea, but I don't necessarily hold proles to account for not being able to articulate deeper issues.

Fundamentally, AI is just the latest (and perhaps most workable for a time) means of extending the debt bubble. Perhaps even a means to "transition" into some sort of new system (as Consuela and others have written about extensively.)

I think people on some gut level can see "oh, well if AI can do everything, I don't want to end up in some situation where I'm still stuck 'working' and being fed crumbs while six jews decide how much food I get that week." Again, people don't even consciously understand this stuff for the most part, but can feel that something is off and that elites are trying to pull the ladder up as The System goes off the rails.

It's not worth being mad (or whatever) that their proposed solution isn't ideal. What are they even supposed to do? At the very least, the general population can see something is off and wants something done. It's up to people with sway to counteract the bad acting elites.

The thing I hate is that the entire reason this shit is being pushed is to give the government money to do whatever the fuck it wants, and what it wants is not now, and will not be in the future, to spend substantially all of the money on the people

It would be used to continue the current system as far into the future as possible. It's blatantly obvious, and yet people are unaware enough that they don't even understand that they would simply be handing the money over to defense contractors, Israel, world policing, etc. and not to improve quality of life of American citizens writ large

This type of shit is exactly how you entrap and enslave the populace because they are too dumb to understand the con

I think to some extent we are all enslaved to The System. Even the "people" running the show are basically working non-stop to keep it going. I sometimes imagine how awful the job of Fed Chair must be at this point. It's just endless crisis management because they refuse to let the system operate in such a way that waste is flushed out and recycled.

But what is the average person really supposed to do? My view is that people need to make decisions to allow themselves (and their families) to functionally walk away from it.

Obviously it is easier said than done. But any attempt at fighting the system just becomes co-opted in some way shape or form. Only if enough people walk away (less mindless consumption, living simpler, etc.) will the system be forced to adjust IMO.

I agree with all of this. Really, all I'm asking for here is to use copious prior examples to anticipate the unintended consequences (and outright lies and manipulation) to not loudly clamor for our chains

I know it's too much to ask. But it's just so fucking sad and pathetic to repeat the same shit ad infinitum

The quality of the electorate being what it is is the main reason I couldn't run for office. We deserve everything we get and more

I disagree in part tbh. The people have consistently voted (outside of True Blue Pockets) for less immigration and things of that nature and they are routinely told to pound sand. The issue is that The People at large have no say whatsoever. There has been research done on this that policy is entirely a reflection of what the top 10% (prob 5%) want, not what the people want. In fact, if the population at large wants something but the top 10% doesn't, there is no way the population at large will get its way.

Strangely, I think this may actually bode well for the future. Right now, many of the "elites" hold crazy views that are counter to reality and to the well-being of civilization. But a lot of these elites will exit stage left (literally many will just die) in the next 10 years. The rising class of elites is far more fractured and includes many more people who are real about the problems. And the rising class of elites comes from the general population.

That doesn't mean that the new paradigm will be great, especially given the new issues that come with some of these so-called "counter-elites," but it will be an improvement from endless BLM / DEI / faggot crap that basically see destroying society as a starting point to its goals.

The government taking equity in AI corps and redistributing dividends to the public is actually the only way to keep society functional while permitting AI to advance as a technology

These people are correct. The fact that this option would *also* be terrible, just not completely catastrophic, is a demonstration of why AI cannot be permitted to advance at all

This point is moot. Under this kind of setup, the population would get some amount of redistributed economic wealth, rather than zero. The fact that the amount would be less than it “should” be is irrelevant. That amount is still greater than zero

The amount remaining with the people would be much, much greater if we put the federal government back into its box and did not seize onto every get rich quick at other peoples expense scheme that comes our way

But, alas, even the smart people among us seem to be satisfied with scrabbling through the carpet for just enough crumbs to subsist on. It's no wonder we're fucked
