The real second-order consequence is that we will lose our warehousing capacity for 18-22yos. We have nowhere else to put them. They cannot and will not afford real housing. (i) If you want to test a student's knowledge, you can just have a paper test or use essay testing software to make them answer in class. This has always been the best way. People have been cheating on essays and take home exams for 30 years.

(ii) To the extent there was value in being able to write and edit and re-edit a 5 paragraph essay for school work, there really isn't value in it anymore. It's like if your calculus class wouldn't let you use a calculator. The new value is probably in someone using AI to coax out a persuasive essay or a well thought out research paper.
