I thought it was appropriate and well done in TBS, though I'd agree in most other cases. I watched it with my wife and found it helpful. From what I remember, when a character broke the fourth wall, what typically followed was a vignette that explained the finance jargon that followed.

I feel like the only people who were impressed by it were people who didn't read a single piece of journalism about how the crisis started

I’ve studied asset backed securities at a graduate level and greatly enjoyed the movie. They very skillfully navigated the line between oversimplification of the issues and going into esoteric details that are not that important.

The movie explicitly is just about a few bit players, not a comprehensive “what happened” of the Great Recession.

Surprising to me... I lived and breathed rmbs for about 5 years and really didnt get the hype. It wasn't because it was too dumbed down, it was because it was a forgettable movie

I really don't understand this. To me it felt like 3/4 of the movie was just shit you would have known if you were paying attention.

And I mean, yeah, it is vaguely compelling that a few people figured it out ahead of time and made big bets and made out like bandits. That entire story just isn't something that is all that compelling over the course of of an entire movie though, especially when you have to sit through all the low IQ explanations.

Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room is a way better watch

Adam McKay always feels the need to have cutesy diagrams to explain every little thing to the viewer. Vice did the same thing a bunch of times. Really cheapens the movie
