Heading into the midterms, a portion of the MAGA base appears to be increasingly hostile to ethnic and religious minorities, including the small but prosperous Indian-American community.
Earlier this month, Bo French, the Republican nominee for a Texas Railroad Commission seat, shared on social media a photo of ecstatic Indian-American students in an Austin stadium celebrating a University of Texas football victory over Ohio State. Mr. French tweeted: “I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.”
Online controversies tend to have a short shelf life, but this one points toward a deeper problem for the GOP. Instead of bringing new voters into the tent, a section of the party base appears intent on driving them away. A Carnegie Endowment for International Peace survey estimated that 32% of Indian-Americans backed Mr. Trump in the 2024 election. Yet this year only 22% of Indian-Americans favor Republicans for the Senate and only 18% favor them for the House, according to last month’s Asian American Voter Survey.
Indian-American Trump supporters aren’t the only minority voters apparently feeling buyer’s remorse. Two years ago, the president won around 48% of the Hispanic vote. Hispanic support for Mr. Trump has since crashed to 26%, according to a recent New York Times/Siena poll. Mr. Trump’s 15% support among black voters in 2024 has declined to 11%.
Indian-Americans form a comparatively small voting bloc. The Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey found that only 5.1 million people, or less than 1.5% of the U.S. population, describe themselves as Indian-American. About two-thirds are U.S. citizens.
These demographics mean that even small shifts in Hispanic or black voting patterns matter more than large swings among Indian-Americans. Nevertheless, in a close election every vote counts. Turning potential voters against your party is self-destructive.
The picture two years ago looked decidedly different. According to research by the Carnegie Endowment’s Milan Vaishnav and colleagues, nearly one-third of Indian-Americans intended to vote for Mr. Trump, up from a little over one-fifth four years earlier. Support for the Democratic ticket weakened from 68% in 2020 to 60% in 2024 despite the presence of Kamala Harris, whose mother emigrated from India, at the top of the ticket. Four in 10 Indian-American men preferred Mr. Trump to Ms. Harris.
In a phone interview, Anang Mittal, an Indian-American who has worked for Sen. Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Mike Johnson, summed up Mr. Trump’s appeal to voters like him. Indian-Americans, he said, are a “natural fit” for the GOP. They tend to be socially conservative and believe in family values. They have concerns with the Democratic Party’s extreme positions on affirmative action and transgender issues. Based on Mr. Trump’s first term, Mr. Mittal expected the president to deepen ties with India and take a tough stance toward both China and radical Islamists.
Mr. Mittal, who was born in New Delhi and emigrated to the U.S. as a 12-year-old in 1990, used to feel welcome in the GOP and broader conservative movement. As a young libertarian, he joined the tea-party movement in 2012. Over the years, he didn’t feel “any hostility” toward his race or Hindu religion. He would push back when Democrats tried to paint the GOP as a “whites only” party.
For Mr. Mittal, the 2024 campaign underscored Mr. Trump’s expansive appeal. His surrogates included practicing Hindus such as Vivek Ramaswamy and Tulsi Gabbard. JD Vance is married to the California-born daughter of Indian immigrants. Barely a week before the election, Mr. Trump wished his supporters a happy Diwali on social media, condemned violence against Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh, and promised to “strengthen our great partnership with India and my good friend, Prime Minister Modi.”
Fast forward to today. Mr. Mittal doesn’t believe Mr. French represents the entirety of the GOP, but he isn’t sanguine about where the party is headed. He sees “a constant barrage” of tweets against Indian-Americans, and silence or even agreement among many of his former tea-party allies.
The parallels with antisemitism are striking. Like Jewish Americans, Indian-Americans are highly educated and have extremely low crime rates and welfare dependency. Both groups are “resented because they are successful,” journalist Jay Nordlinger said in a phone interview.
In 2004, Mr. Nordlinger wrote an article in National Review in which he called Indian-Americans “entrepreneurial, hard-working, striving, traditionalist, family-oriented, religious, assimilationist, patriotic”—therefore natural GOP voters. That hopeful time “feels like a thousand years ago,” Mr. Nordlinger said. “The GOP has become a populist-right party.”
Mr. Nordlinger may be overly pessimistic. Plenty of conservatives have condemned Mr. French’s race-baiting. But there’s no question that many GOP-inclined Indian-Americans are wondering if the party has room for them any more. |

This actually gets to the problem in a way the author didn't intend. Even under the absolute best case, these people will always be majority left leaning. It's why Coulter was right in 2015 to say Trump would win by ostensibly being the candidate for white people.
Trying to niggle at the margins for votes from people who are fundamentally left leaning and truly foreign is a loser in the long-term. Obviously there are exceptions, but if they gain critical mass those exceptions no longer matter.
Especially considering that to "appeal" to such people at large, you fundamentally need to shift away from all of the values that white people historically care about. |
