The experiments somehow resulted in AIDS a few years later, and these doods started getting mad rich, starting with Robert Gallo patenting the PCR test for HIV. The only thing they didn't have was a dood in the govt who could make it all happen.
Of this crew, Fauci was by far the youngest. The others had been doing this shit with OPV since the 1950s. Fauci was the new guy, so he wasn't in a strong bargaining position to begin with. They ended up creating a kind of hierarchy where Gallo and David Baltimore and a few others were allowed to get filthy rich off these patents, and Fauci would have to take the government jerb. In order to make things more fair and just, they rigged it so that Fauci's salary was abnormally high, and he was allowed to receive monetary gifts as "honoraria" from various entities, including the Italian government (he is OMRI, their version of UK knighthood) and a $1mm gift from the Israeli government for "speaking truth to power." So he's still rich as fuck, just not Bob Gallo-rich.
EDIT even if he wasn't youngest by age, he was newest to the field and never spent much time in Africa. |

They gave it to Luc Montagnier for a reason: Montagnier supplied Gallo with the tumor sample Gallo used to "discover" HIV, but he also knew that's what Gallo intended to do. So Montagnier filed for the same patent in France, but said nothing about it. Instead he waited for Gallo to file his patent in America, then he sued Gallo and proved he made the discovery first. The case was settled so the public never saw the details, but the Nobel committee saw it all. That's why they gave the prize to Montagnier and Gallo got dick.
