Kinmen.
A Taiwanese island 6 miles off the coast of Fujian. Population 127,000. Home to: – two national parks – a sorghum liquor museum – live, uncleared landmines – a Starbucks with a bunker wall behind it.
In 1958, we shelled each other every other day. Now they sell commemorative shell casings to Chinese tourists on 72-hour ferry visas.
It’s legally part of Taiwan. Strategically undefendable. Emotionally abandoned.
Every American diplomat who visits gets the same photo: thumbs up beside a minefield, captioned “Democracy’s Front Line”. Then they fly home and deny F-16 sales to Taipei for being too provocative.
Kinmen is the geopolitical equivalent of a World War I veteran in a Rascal scooter: alive, technically. Honored, ceremonially. Left outside in the rain when the parade ends.
China doesn’t invade because they already own the hotels.
Anyway, she teaches night classes and livestreams dumpling reviews now. Sometimes she hears jet engines at dusk and texts “Is it starting?” No one replies.
