And I had to score keep. I'm terrible at it. Such a mom job. I was there without my girls and had my 6 Year old to watch. It just ruins the game. And it's all online. You can't catch up when the 'book' gets fucked.

We dropped a 13 run lead. Coach had my kid pitch first because he was worried my son would get pulled puking. He did 3 innings and gave up three runs. That's not a lot in 10u. Then he puked. He came back and filled in at center when the normal center fielder came out crying because his hand hurt. The next play with my kid at center was a home run over his head. He looked over at me so pissed off. He said 'that kid was huge, just hit him.'

Crazy baseball week bros. We had a game Monday for both boys but after a weekend of both dance and baseball tournaments my wife decided to take a rare off day. I felt guilty but we skipped the Monday games. We had a little league game Tuesday for both boys. Wednesday was a select practice. I'm taking my youngest boy to the select facility with me pitching to bat in any unused cage (he's finally starting to really like it). Oldest boy had a little league game Thursday and we have select practice tonight.

Tomorrow oldest son has a double header that will hopefully finish up before select practice afterwards at 3:00. This all sounds awful...but I'm so busy I didn't have the capacity to take girls to dance. Spending the day at the ballfield is incredibly chill too. You throw balls at little kids for an hour (coach pitch team) then go grab a burger and fries (2015 prices) and kick back and watch some ball (majors team).

Won our first two yesterday. If we win one of two today I bet we make it to the championship round (which means I also have to drive on Monday). The tournament goes by wins/losses first but run differential second, which can lead to some pretty retarded outcomes and encourages running the score up.

We won the first game Sunday against the other undefeated team in the tournament (my kid was 4/4 but cheap hits), but lost the second game by one run. Another team with one loss that we beat got in ahead of us because they put up 13 runs on the worst team in the tournament. So we didn't get to play on Monday.

After we lost the second game lol my son blew up. He was trying to hold bite his tongue but the pitcher we put in gave up runs like crazy, and some were just from not paying attention. My kid hates the other kid, he either wants to be on any team the other kid isn't on or he'll just give up baseball. He settled down by the time we got home but I've never seen him that pissed off.

Another thing...the travel team gives little league parents a lot of flack. However, of the 3 kids we have on little league teams, none struck out. Not a single error between them. My kid is hitting 450 now with an era just above 4.

My youngest kid does coach pitch and they do an in house tournament. Lol he had a walk off single to win it last night. He had no idea what was going on.

My kid hit .800 in the month of May. He gets lucky a lot though with little chip shots. Before we had little league 'hits' and select 'hits'. Little league kids can't catch a pop fly, so sending one into center field you're probably safe. Select kids catch that ball so you need line drives. 10U select kids will catch pop flies but a hard grounder to third and somewhere in the operation the fielding team will fuck up. Not always, but a majority of the time. By 11 or 12 those are all outs too. Basically we grade hits. If he says he went 4/4 I'll ask what kind of hits.

Lol we do have the big sun glasses. They're stupid. I don't see the gold chains. Most of the parents are pretty conservative and lots of the teams are actually rather poor. Many are like an all star team from a regional little league. They always get their asses kicked. People talk shit about them but at least it's an example of the two leagues working together.

Yeah definitely a pick up truck crowd, especially for the suburban teams.

I hate those stupid glasses, they break all the time and a regular pair of Oakley style glasses would be more practical. I also hate walk up music, parents that put up big team banners and anything to do with snacks (tbf snacks are a little league thing). I am guilty of buying some of the bs gear (eg Bruce Bolt batting gloves), but some of the parents go all out. Ive noticed the kids of these parents usually aren't the best on the team and the parents are almost trying to make up for it by getting bullshit gear. A $400 bat isn't going to make up for not hitting the cages every week.

Oldest kids team played on Sunday in the interleague tournament. Our family was set to be out of town and it was raining sideways....but they still fucking played until an ump fell on his ass and basically cancelled the game. We were down by 3 runs and that eliminated us. Rain out tournament games are decided by a coin toss. My youngest kid on coach pitch (also in tournament play) also had a game Sunday but they called it after 2 innings. I guess there was a big argument. I've never seen one of these parent meltdowns and kind of sad I missed it. One coach dad on the other team didn't do handshake afterwards...lol these are kindergartners and first graders.

Because of the select team we declined doing all stars at the beginning of the year. But his coach laid some guilt on me so we signed up. We were almost done with little league. My wife talked the league manager through our schedule and explained we are not allowed to skip select practices. They still took us. Lately my boys want to go to the ballpark even when they don't have a game. They hang out and play. All of the boys at the ballpark have been working on an old defunct T-ball field to make it a wiffle ball field. Fuck libs.

Took the weekend tournament. Boys all got rings and pictures taken. They were playing defense out of their minds. The other team was hitting the ball solid just not getting on base. It ended up being a shut out which is pretty rare for a tournament final.

Sad part, this is our second to last tournament and tryouts for next year start in July. I already know a few core kids are leaving. Too bad because I think this team we have now could go far if they stayed together.

We're clearing out some trees on the back end of our property for a pool and my son is pushing hard for a batting cage.

Scrimmage tonight against older boys team. Should be fun. One of the older boys is phenomenal, like I could see the kid playing in college. My kid has always been on the same little league team so he's never had to go up to bat against the kid. Could be a first tonight.

My youngest boy lost on Tuesday and their season is officially over. That's a lot for a kindergartner. They started in March. I looked back at our prior scheduling and we never played into June for kindergarten age boys.

It depends on the league. Little league is pretty standard American mom gear. A few, mostly minority, will wear tights and crop tops. But that's pretty rare. For the travel ball teams, the moms are a tier above with the Lululemon tights etc. They are far less likely to be fat and more looks conscious. They're still a few levels below dance moms, some of which dress like their teen daughters.

We got knocked out today. The level of fielding between little league and select baseball is huge. So many blown easy plays, and this is all stars. It's just not comparable. My kid gave up 4 hits on 70 pitches. They still lost. Third strike drops are just a gut punch for pitchers. Sometimes they'll over throw first and the kid will get to third.

We still have a big tournament in Oregon but that will be it for the season. We're going to have my kid tryout for 12u even though he should be going to 11u. He started 9u at 8 so he knows lots of the kids. This time of year things start to get sketchy with players trying out for different teams. I wish they'd keep the core group together but you also don't want to get fucked with a shit team. Eg last year we had two 12u teams and one was much better.

We also have my kid doing baseball camp at the training facility t/w/th. He's the only kid there from his team. Lots of older kids, up to 17. We might try football this year too. Season starts in a few weeks.

I finally started hanging net for backyard batting cage. It's a long story but I had to build a retaining wall and fence along back side of our property to make a nice level(ish) space. First issue I noticed is it's not long enough. I only had 40' of scaffolding so when our team got a new nets the manager offered me either a 40' or 70' net. I hate the net all bunched up on the ground so I took the 40'. It's too fucking small for anything other than soft toss. I have an extra 30' of netting I'm going to try and splice in and I'll have to get more rigging for the net. I have a nice pitching machine but I don't think it's doable with only 35' of usable hitting space. Other than that my boys were out practicing in it yesterday which made me pretty fucking happy. Eventually I want to put in a plywood floor and build a proper roof setup with lights and speakers.

My 9 y/o son is playing baseball for the first time this season and really loves it. We are just doing the town rec league, so nothing too intense.

He's been able to keep up, but I feel like he's getting a late start. Any advice on stuff I can do with him? I'm not really a baseballmo.

I was never really into baseball either. First off, if he can hit the ball teams will always find a spot for him. However, he will never get good just doing games and team practices. They don't get enough reps. Get a tee and a net and work on form (lots of easy YouTube videos on batting technique). Work out his form then take him to a park and pitch him some live balls. I bought a mechanical pitching machine that was great for this, especially at that age. Bonus if you can get one of his friends to switch off fielding balls. After you think that's getting dialed in find a local batting cage and spend a day a week. It's fun for them and keeps it exciting.

Fielding is similar but gets a lot less love. Bring the net I had you get for tee work and set that up at the park. Use the mechanical machine to shoot him grounders and pop flies with your son fielding them and throwing them to the net. I find this part boring but they need thousands of attempts before it becomes second nature. You want to get him to act without much thought. The hesitation a lot of kids have when fielding the ball kills plays and drives coaches nuts.

These are cheap and relatively easy options. If you're serious you'll have to explore local travel ball teams. Tryouts usually start in late July. Most leagues start at 9u so he's not too far behind. Lastly, don't fall for those $400 bats. I find gear cheaper through team swaps or just on Facebook.

Good luck. It's really the best sport for parents.

I'm really enjoying the community aspect of it, but I know that's unique to town rec league. We have a private town travel team too that some of the kids play on. I might check that out for next year, but feel like we need to develop a base of skills.

you dont need to develop shit for baseball (unless you're a pitcher, which I can't really speak to) at a young age beyond familiarity with hitting a ball. by the time you're in high school general athleticism trumps whatever practice someone had as a ten year old a million times over when it comes to fielding/throwing.

I was talking to a parent last year after a tournament and he said none of this shit matters until they're 15. But I have seen some kids that you just knew at an early age were going to be something different. I don't do any of this baseball shit with any future expectations whatsoever. My kids good at it now and it's a good outlet for his hyper competitiveness.
