Never and I never even knew anyone who did or saw anyone reading them in school (80s and 90s). Comics seemed like some leftover dying thing from the boomer times and I was surprised by their later resurgence in popularity or that there were somehow all these "comics fans" around.

People knew Superman, Batman, Spiderman and the Hulk, because of the tv shows and Saturday morning cartoons, but nobody had any idea about the "X-men" or the "Avengers" or what have you.

I was into Alan Moore in the 90s - his “From Hell” graphic novel was like a work of literature tbh, there’s no way anyone under 22 or so understood what the fuck was going on in that.

Was a great way to spend time at the public library while waiting for younger siblings to finish up with story hour and whatever else. Spent HOURS in that library growing up and can still vividly recall the new book smell and the smile of the kindly old librarian lady.

got into them for investment purposes when I was a teenager around 1986. I have the #1 Superman released that year as well as the Dark Knight series. Tons of #1 releases still in the plastic protective covers, but yes I started reading and getting into them. They're addictive.

the music and animation style of batman: TAS is unmatched. you'd be hard pressed to find a show aimed at kids that looks and represents an aesthetic better (art deco). it's like your high school planetarium is griffith's or your school library is the folger shakespeare library

I like the more artistic ones like The Sandman, Watchmen, Maus, and Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth. Superhero comics are mostly crap. Manga is generally of a higher quality, and some of it is rather good.

I had access to several bankers boxes of comics from my older gen-x brother and cousins. They were hit or miss. Mostly catered to losers. But as a bonus, a few playboys and penthouses were hidden in the back of one of the boxes.
