There's no exploration really. You're just playing through the same levels repeatedly just to get to the boss, where you finally have a chance to try something different (use a different weapon on him).
I much preferred more open NES/SNES games like the Metroids, Bionic Commando, Goonies II, etc. |

Mega Man 2 in particular is actually quite easy for an NES game. |
