there are some that are okay.

but personally i've adopted a policy of not buying watches that are worth less than the cost of routine servicing.

it takes a time and practice to learn. a few burner watches to experiment with. a moderate outlay on equipment and supplies. hunting for parts. and a lot of patience.

unless you want to take it up as a serious hobby, it probably isn't worth it.

The lights are fun for a while but they die out over time

They’re 180. I like to get beater divers and wear them 24/7 until they are just beat to shit. I got one and took it 100ft+ on several dives and wore it until the old australian waterborne band started falling apart. Still have it but it eats batteries because it needs a service. And now I’ve moved on to cheap mechanical dive watches. But I have 2 distinct memories of the luninox glow, one was a girl remarking on how bright it was at night, and another about how bad that watch band smelled. I literally never took it off for years.

I don't know anything about watches, but I think they look cool. $300-$400 seems reasonable for a watch every 4-5 years.

I saw another brand called Marathon that looked cool. Still researching though.

If I wanted Tritium I would get Ball

But if you compare the best tritium to luminous C3 or BGW9 in the dark, you would never even consider tritium again

That's before factoring in the half life and replacement/service cost

Tbh I bought like 6 watches in the last few months (4 Swiss autos) and never even heard of Luminox.

They seem fine aesthetically but their value proposition is ambiguous. Is it just a Swiss Army watch with tritium?

Regardless it seems too high maintenance and bulky for a purpose driven "first responder" watch

I've never heard of Ball, but I'll look it up. I feel like a lot of these watches all kind of look the same basically. I'm not a collector and just want to wear something that isn't a faggy Apple watch.

Ball is positioned as over engineered field/tool watch and priced for collectors

Vaer (made in USA competitor of Luminox) and Farer (made in UK competitor of Luminox) are closer comparisons

Or one of the Christopher Ward lumiere dive watches

Honestly just go to Japan get a preowned Omega for a huge discount. Service it with Omega back to mint condition and it'll be under their warranty again

I like the Omega idea. Always wanted to go to Japan. A friend has a seamaster and it always catches my eye.

EDIT: Holy shit, I had no idea they cost that much. How much are they in Japan?

A used Speedmaster that would be like $5-6k here would be $2.5-3k in Japan and no sales tax iirc, just wear it on the plane

It's not gonna meaningfully depreciate beyond that once you're back here

Everything is cheaper there man

A $50 meal at a nice steakhouse in Japan be over $100 here before tax and tips (and they don't accept tips)

My neighbor took his family to Japan for Disney because he priced out Orlando and it was like $2-3k more all in before you even factored in food and other bullshit costs
