calls him out by name, 5:10-6:20, says his theory of innate grammar is just stupid and anyone who buys into it is part of a cult

who is right?

How does he destroy it he doesn’t even address it. He just says Chomsky’s theory of universal grammar is clearly wrong and behavioralism is clearly right

altho it did remind me of that observation that scientific paradigms rarely shift by persuasion and mostly shift by the older view literally aging and dying out. (Chomsky's still alive, apparently. holy shit.)

At this point I don’t think the neural net guys are trying to persuade them as much as they are just publicly dunking on them. These guys built an LLM based on their understanding of what language is and it works. Hard to argue with results.

The fact linguists were never able to build anything remotely as capable as ChatGPT (even in narrow domains like translation) should do a lot to diminish their credibility compared to ML people. Why should we believe anything they say? The biology aligns with connectionism too.

..except linguistics is a core part of most AI systems, since its theories and concepts are used to parse text, construct sentences with proper grammar, etc. Also Chomsky himself predicted that the computationally-intense techniques of what eventually came to be known as ML/AI would be the only way to handle problems like translation because linguistics and science in general lack any fundamental understanding of how thought works. So maybe we should listen to what they have to say.

linguistics is absolutely not a core part of modern AI systems. they dispensed with linguistic theories and trained powerful function approximators to learn to predict the next token. everything that comes out of it is an emergent property built on data and learning.

"also Chomsky himself predicted that the computationally-intense techniques of what eventually came to be known as ML/AI would be the only way to handle problems like translation because linguistics and science in general lack any fundamental understanding of how thought works."

Uhh if you ask ChatGPT itself if it uses any concepts or theories from linguistics I'm sure it'll disagree with what you just wrote

ChatGPT knows about linguistics because it has read everything, but it wasn't programmed using linguistic knowledge. it's a decoder only transformer that maps vector representations of text segments to a vector representation of the next text segment. there's nothing resembling linguistics inside its operating mechanisms.

there is no evidence of specialized symbol circuitry in the brain. language representation occurs in the neocortex, which is anatomically very uniform and it appears to learn based on general pattern recognizers that wire up through learning. to the extent brains use symbols, they are learned patterns built out of synapses.

also linguistics is a bullshit field for low iq jew grinders to rent seek because philology got shitcanned as a result of the holocaust, which never happened (but should have) also jews were too dumb for that discipline anyway
