Date: January 10th, 2024 3:55 PM Author: cyan public bath there are different ways you can set it up but i run plex directly on the synology NAS so that it's "always on" and not subject to the state of my computers. I don't run my torrenting app on synology cuz getting a VPN set up on a NAS seemed like a hassle, so it seemed more straightforward to just make sure the VPN was on on my main computer and torrent as needed from that. btw people on here have recommended alternate setups (such as "Seedboxes") but I haven't had the time to look into them and am happy with my current solution.
i use Infuse instead of the plex app for playback cuz it supports speeding up videos (yes yes I'm weird/autistic etc, thanks). infuse also has the advantage of doing "direct playback" so that it can just play whatever format, whereas if you use the plex app for playback there often needs to be a conversion that happens first.
overall i'm very happy with it and find that it meets all my COONSOOMING needs. i can do remote access when i'm traveling (through e.g. ipad) and also download videos offline. and i don't need to worry about streaming fees or shows i like getting yanked to another platform ever....it's all local |

i use nvidia shield tv pro as clients in my home. direct play. atmos, dv, hdr10+, it will play anything. |

Date: January 10th, 2024 8:51 PM Author: Bearded turdskin chapel i was doing NAS for awhile and then i went all in and built a storage server that is on 24/7. server also handles home automation and home network. it has 8x8tb for storage, effective 59tb online, run by a supermicro jbod controller card (broadcom chip). it took awhile but i found software called stablebit drivepool which pools disks and presents as one drive, software striped, since it is slow moving data (media, backups, etc.) i am okay with this instead of raid or mirror. it also allows different make/model/capacity of drive and hot swap. since it is all one machine, i use crash42 small business crashplan which is unlimited cloud backup for $10 a month for one machine. i laugh that i backup over 30tb for $10 a month. i have been running this setup for almost 8 years now.
